You can also buy one already made with wheels and a larger capacity. Several models to choose from at Camping World.

True enough but with storage in short supply a 5 gallon auxiliary black water holding tank stores easier than a 15 or 25 gallon holding tank.

I've used it at home, when the line was too long at the dump station. I can carry this tote if it's not full. AND, if it's reasonably clean I've used it for gray water as well.

How do you prevent leakage while unhooking? There is no valve once you disconnect?

Are you asking me? Because it uses a regular style sewer hose, close the valve on the trailer, tip the tote upright, unhook the hose from the trailer and let it drain into the tote. There's no leakage or at least no more than if you were hooked up straight to a sewer connection.

It just appears that if you raise the blue tote that the waste would flow back against the drain and once you disconnect, spill. Whereas with the conventional drain everything is downhill from drain? A valve in the hose would help.

The entry hole in the 5 gal tote is off set from center, so placing on the ground with the entry hole high instead of low will prevent flow back. I don't see an issue. The key to the blue tote storage tank's success is to empty when 1/2 full.

Here is a small, purpose built tank in lieu of modifying a potable water container:

Orignal Barker Tote-Along Tote Tank, 5 Gallon - Barker 10887 - Holding Tanks - Camping World

Since the 5 gallon tote does not have the bayonet fitting you would need to utilize a threaded straight hose adapter:

Interesting that CW is less expensive than Amazon, I guess the shipping fees are the equalizers.

I understand now, thanks.

making your own costs $20.00+-
buying one made costs $45.00 and you still have to get the tubes and the fittings.

I see that you have to buy a 15 gal one to get the hoses and stuff included.

Isn't this just what he was doing? What's different?

I misunderstood and thought he was measuring what was coming out of the tank rather than going in.

follow up

Thought I'd add the latest. After posting I did send Escape an email. Reace replied
"Hi Jeff
I don’t have an answer as to why you would be getting less capacity in the tanks. Nothing has changed with the tank sizes. I will measure the water going into a dry tank and see if there is something to that.

I will keep in touch.

Reace"

Hadn't heard further from them so couple weekends ago I had more time and did another test. This time raising the door side up on Anderson levelers. I also raised and lowered the hitch to drain as much as possible. Then leveled the trailer.

This time I got 21.5gal into gray tank instead of 19gal.

In the black I got less? 13gal instead of the 14.5gal before. That could have been an error recording amounts as I put in but definitely no more. So still a large difference in actual vs specs.

I sent Reace another email asking if he'd done the dry tank measurement? And sent my new test.

I haven't gotten any reply.

I'm wondering if how the tanks are mounted to the trailer could be distorting them and decreasing volume? Unfortunately I can't tell as I got the foam insulation on the underside.

At least for now I know I have less and to watch it more when on a longer boondock.

Jeff

Would u provide details of your "outdoor" faucet? Looks very handy. I too put my shower on the passenger side and has proven very convenient.

Perhaps for the grey waste tank, but the black tank simply sits flat on the floor inside.

The discharge pipe attached to the black tank increases the effective volume; it should hold more than the nominal volume.
