Removing WH anode with 3/8" ratchet

I carry a 3/8" socket set with me and wanted a 1-1/16 socket to remove and replace the water heater anode on our 5.0. As you probably know, sockets over 1" come sized for 1/2" drive ratchets, not 3/8".

After a long search I came across this 27mm socket sized for a 3/8" drive. Since 1-16" = 26.9875 mm it fits right up. Makes anode removing and installing a breeze.

Ed

Here's the 27mm socket on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07K2TTC11

Adapter

Your way is 1 way. Another way is a 3/8" to 1/2" adapter. I use a 1/2" breaker bar 18" long for my anode removal. That extra leverage makes a big difference.

Like Tom, we have several adapters that allow using 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 ratchets and breaker bars on any socket of non corresponding drive size. Sometimes you end up with a pretty goofy looking apparatus but for reasons of clearance, strength, and general field expediency they work. Sometimes you need a real light touch, sometimes the gorilla has to come out of the cage.

Takes time to collect it all without spending a small fortune but handy once you have it. I have an 11/16 Box end wrench that I did not use for at least 20 years. Then unneeded to take the nuts off of the backing plates on the Escape brake assemblies. Offset, long length style, and perfect fit, my wrenches don’t all match and they are not shiny. form follows function in my world.

It was Johnny Cash performing “One Piece At A Time” who sang “With a little bit of help from an A-dapter kit” when he built the purloined Caddy.

I missed that line, but certainly use adapters from time to time. Have to go back to the record.
