Replacement CO/Propane detector

An exact replacement for the older style MTI Safe-T-Alert combo CO/Propane detector isn’t widely available and is quite pricey. Came across a unit called RV Safe model RVCOLP-2B (see link) that has adapter plates to match several existing sizes. Found it for the best price at Camping World which isn’t usually the case. The larger plate it comes with appears to be a good fit to cover the approximately 5.5” x 2” hole. I’ll follow up once I get around to installing.

Interesting. My 5.0TA never had anything other than a propane detector. Maybe that's because a CO detector needs to be at sleeping level and my trailer has a sleeping loft. This was a direct replacement for me, although it's about $20 more now than what I paid: https://www.campingworld.com/classic...ml?cgid=alarms

Hi Donna: Do you have a smoke detector? I replaced ours with a combo smoke and CO as I know the debate about proper mounting location for CO. I suppose I could have replaced this one with propane detector only but this will have us covered high and low.

I do, the smoke detector is near the ceiling on the bathroom wall.

I don't run my furnace at night. Or, at least I haven't. When I'm hooked up to electricity I use my Vornado Whole Room electric heater AND an electric blanket. No electricity... lots of blankets

Amazing how much retailers mess around with pricing these days. I got 50% off two days ago, now it’s 30% off...

Isn't this the same unit? $69 at our favorite big box substitute.

Sure looks like it. My usually good internet searching somehow failed me. Had a few false alarms with the MTI over the years. Might not be a bad idea to try something different I suppose.

I have that exact same unit in my Sasquatch ;>) that I installed at the beginning of 2020. Yes, they are readily available. I may go with a Black one next time, unless it is more expensive.

My old unit was a surface mount MTI LP only detector. When I removed it, it looked like Stevie Wonder had installed it. I finally figured out that people kept using it for a foot rest or heel rest and ripping the screws out. As it is only in thin Luan, I used a razor knife and a steel straight edge and cut a clean hole for the new flush mount and removed most of the old screw holes in the process. I also used metal speed nuts or tinnerman nuts for the screws to thread into so they could not just rip out of the wood. Nuts found at Home Depot in the small hardware drawers, or elsewhere.

I replaced the factory installed battery smoke/CO detector mounted on the ceiling with the exact same unit. First Alert Powered Alarm SCO5CN Combination Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector, Battery Operated, 1 Pack, White

Installed

Just a follow-up that the RV Safe unit installed perfectly with one of the supplied adapter plates. This was for the older style rectangular MTI combo CO/Propane unit. There was a second adapter plate that it came with that might work with the newer units ETI uses that are more square. It powered right up and tested fine. I’ll report back if we experience any false alarms but hopefully good to go until 2027.

Combo CO 2 and smoke

If these darn detectors didn’t have a life length, it would be good to carry an extra. I’m tired of having these things die when I’m out in cactus and snake country. So far I’ve replaced three of these things now:Two in my old tin can trailer and now one in the new-to-me Escape.
There’s something about Arizona……

...as if empty propane tanks weren't reason enough to replace your trailer. ;-)

This is the style in my 2020 5.0TA….it just started acting up. I “think” it’s a surface mount? Anyone have a recommendation for a replacement? I have yet to take it apart to conform surface mount. It’s been cold and snowy with Rain lately here in the Niagara Falls area.

Surface looks a bit dusty. Vacuum it, especially the sensor areas.

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I did clean it and used a vacuum on it.

And you're reasonably certain it is not "acting up" due to a propane leak or off-gassing from lead-acid batteries?
