RML 8555 Fridge won't light

My RML8555 Fridge has been working fine. It still works on 110 and 12 volt, but it won't light when using propane. The pilot light will start and then it just sits there with the pilot burning, but it won't "light up". I don't get any error code and from the inside panel it looks as though the fridge is working (no red blinking light).
Any ideas?

Has the orifice ever been removed and soaked in a shot glass of alcohol for 20-25 minutes? After removing you can hold it and look up to see any impediments. Even a strand of what looks like a single hair can cause a problem.

It isn't hard- yet to remove the wrap-around flame guard you need a small torx bit for the screw on top of the shroud. I replaced that with a small Phillips.

In the middle of nowhere my RMD8555 stopped lighting. Not wanting to disassemble anything for the first time in the woods I opted for a few wacks to the orifice with a small wrench. That temporary fix has been working for 3 years now. Someday I'll fix it correctly...

Also, if the internal temperature of the refrigerator is up to temperature setting, the gas won’t fire until the temp drops below the setting. Sometimes being patient is the solution! Good Luck!

Hi: alanmalk... That approach worked for a TV camera on the moon... but they used a hammer!!! Alf

On my 19 I always suspected that the gas valve stuck sometimes.

Yes, wacking it sometimes worked but so did shutting the main tank valves and undoing the incoming line to the valve, thereby releasing the internal pressure.

Here's a few pictures. One is at night with the pilot burning. It will burn like that all day long. The orifice is the thing with the flame coming out, correct? It was suggested to soak it in alcohol for 20-25 minutes, would that be rubbing alcohol?

Anything else in these pictures that I should tap with a hammer?

Sorry. The one picture is sideways. Not sure why.

From your original post it seemed it would not light. So it seems it does run on propane, yet won't cool.

That was my original problem too. What I finally figured out was that while the burner was lit- the flame was wimpy. Upon removing the orifice and looking through it I could clearly see what looked like a hair across one end. Soaked in tequila(isopropyl fine too of course) and then the flame seemed twice as robust and you can hear the difference.

The flame is part of the burner; the orifice is like the carburetor directly behind the burner.

So In photo 4 is the burner the part with the slots up top(photo orientation not actual) and the orifice at the bottom in brass? How do you remove the orifice?

In the sideways photo the orifice is the brass object in lower left. To remove you need a small torn bit to remove the flame guard(already removed in photos) then an 11mm to undo the nut on the copper gas line while holding the orifice with a 17mm.

Not the RMD8555, yet a fairly close depiction of what you need to do:

That nut behind the red locktite is the 11mm. Hold the brass nut in front of it with a 17MM(I believe) or a crescent wrench to remove the propane line(turn off propane at tank and light stove until it dies). then hold that same nut while spinning off the front nut of same size with a socket. That is your orifice.

Yeah. We have made progress. I clean the orifice with alcohol. Started up fridge and it was working. I let it run an hour or so and it started cooling. ALTHOUGH.
I notice a "puff, puff, puffing sound coming from the burner tube. The blue flame was going on and off (nano second). Is that air in the line? How do I fix that? Another concern. Inside the coach I flipped the LP gas switch to off and flipped the emergency LP gas switch to off (near the tank, outside). I then lit the stove (both burners) and the pilot on the fridge. I let them burn for 5 minutes. They never went out. Are my switches not working?

Sounds like you have a Winnebago Via 25T? That very well may have a solenoid switch to shut off the propane and perhaps it has failed in the open position.

Has your propane regulator ever been changed? They should be changed every ten to fifteen years: https://rvshare.com/blog/rv-propane-...er%20a%20while.

Also- check all your hoses for cracks. I had a tank to regulator hose leaking right at eight years. Your RV looks to be 12 years old.

Would a bad regular be causing the puffing problem?
