RV Water Hose - 1/2 or 5/8

I have searched the posts and have not found any discussion about RV water hoses. Years ago when we had a truck camper with minimal amenities (gray water, no black water) we just used a 1/2 inch cheap hose to fill the small tank since we were never connected to a campground system. Now that we are moving up to an Escape with many more comforts and features I am wondering whether to go with a 1/2 or 5/8 hose for our Escape. I would also like to get input and words of wisdom about recommended or not recommended brands of water hose. I have a pressure regulator and hose connect water filter. Thanks in advance for all input.

I like the blue hose from Camco with the wound wire on the end for tension relief. I think it's a half inch hose. Since the interior water lines are skinny PEX, and you use a pressure regulator (we do) I should think the hose diameter won't really matter.

Just make sure whatever hose you use is for potable water - not a garden hose.

It's my opinion that the tendency of a hose to kink is frustrating and so is the problem of a hose being too stiff to roil up easily for storage. I still have not found the perfect hose but then again haven't looked very hard either. I don't think the 1/2 or 5/8 diameter matters much. Also make sure you have a water bandit for accessing water sources without threads or with larger than usual garden hose threads. Used ours 3 times in 14 nights out this past trip.

That is the one on the top of my list. I have learned, sometimes the hard way, get the right tool for the job and paying more for quality is often less expensive in the long run. Thanks.

I have not heard about a water bandit. Will do some searches online to learn more. Thanks.

I think a 50' hose in one hose length is far too long and makes for tripping opportunities. I'd rather have 2 - 25' or likely better, a 10' and a 25'. Currently have 2 - 25's but the camp sites I have been using generally have a faucet within 10' or I'll drive up to water access and fill my tank and then go park. The 2- 25'er is nice when its time to wash the trailer. OK getting a microscopic here, 2 - 25'ers and 1- 10' for close uses. 10' of hose doesn't take up much room.

Tom

Although 3 hoses is a bit much and doesn't help with my trailer diet program.

Zero G Hose

We tried many versions over the years, and while this one can kink, it is super flexible, durable (as far as I know) and packs into a small space. As far as the kinking goes, as long as you lay it out properly once the water is present in the hose, it stays unkinked. We like it. And it's drinking safe.

Very informative. I had been thinking that 25' would be a good length for one hose but was wondering how often a 50' would be needed or when a 25' might be too long or cumbersome. You have given me a few more things to ponder. Thanks.

Very nice. Yet another option to ponder. We once had a soft hose that rolled up into a plastic reel well over 20 years ago. That one worked but had some shortcomings. This looks to be an improvement on that concept. Thanks for sharing.

So far happy with my pre-coiled 25' water hose. Light and no fighting to coil it after use. Only wish it came in 5/8th diameter.

That ain't it but close enough.

I use a 25' and a 10' CamCo hoses. Most times one or the other is perfect. Only rarely have I had to hook them together. I also carefully roll them up and unroll them with no kinking issues. one key step is to flush them and the campground water line for a couple of minutes before hooking to the trailer. Sometimes the galvanized portion has rust in it and it makes the filter last longer if that is flushed out of the line first.

Cheers! and happy camping!

I carry a 25' and a 10' hose, if that doesn't work I move.

I actually use 5/16" hose. My thoughts are that the hose sits in the sun and the water tastes terrible, it is also hot, a smaller diameter hose does not take long to flush the 5/16" line. I also like low flow so we are not filling up the holding tanks

My standard set up is 2 10' hoses (1/2") with a water filter between them. This works in 95% of the campgrounds I've stayed in, and leaves less hose on the ground. I do carry a 25' hose that I only dig out when the 2 10' hoses don't cut it...

Hi Jon
That's what I think I will go to. Only once in the past five years was a 10 and a 25 too short and that was because the trailer could have been backed up farther but it would have taken leveling so I didn't have quite enough hose. My neighbor came over and used his 50 feet to fill my tank so crisis averted. I'm going to get another ten and should be set. I think putting the filter in the middle will be good too. I've got 550 feet of 8 ply 5/8'in the yard for keeping things watered, it's kind of a drag.

Why put the filter between 2 hoses vs at the source? Means one of the hoses can get contaminated or next use you may confuse with the clean one?

I personally do not like the blue 5/8-inch Camcorder hose. I had one and found it too stiff and therefore to difficult to roll up, especially in lower temperatures. I also would agree with the previous posts that state that the small diameter of the pex plumbing does not require a diameter greater than 1/2-inch for adequate flow and pressure internally. And as far as placement of a filter is concerned, while I generally connect the regulator to the source followed by a filter, I do not see filter location as an issue because I always flush my hose/hoses before rolling and storing.
All that being said, I have two 25-foot hoses; both are 1/2-inch. One is a drinking water safe coil hose that I got at Camping World. That is my hose of choice unless the source is more than 15 or 20 feet away from the trailer. In that case, I have to use it in tandem with my other hose. The other is a "conventional" vinyl hose which is round when full but somewhat flattens out when drained. It is easy to cool through a wide range of temperatures. Unfortunately, I have had it for years, do not know who made it, and haven't seen one in an RV accessories store in recent memory.

I tried several different water hoses and wasn't pleased with them. I wanted something that could roll up small enough into a plastic container for easy storage. Found this one at Pioneer Building Supply in Chilliwack while wandering the store while waiting for my trailer to get some repair work done.

I love it! I don't like that it's 50 feet though. Wwwwaaaayyy too long, but it rolls up beautifully into my plastic container (that fits in the front storage bin) as it's super flexible once the water is out of it. If it gets a kink once you put water through it, it's super easy to take out and you don't see a crease in the hose later on like with the others I tried.

I sure wish they did a 10' or 20' length though.

I love the Zero-g hose (I have two for my garden) but I am not sure it is for potable water or not. As some say "size does not matter" .... I do find a long hose can make the water warm on a warm day.... Nill
