When we had our boat in Holland, once the Dutch people saw the Canadian flag, they couldn't do enough for us. Sometimes we were treated like royalty. Just going down a canal the locals would wave at us. We got taken out to dinner, driven to the train and picked up when we returned. We did hear the comments that parents had billeted Canadians that liberated Holland. It's nice that they must have been well behaved and didn't wear out their welcome.

Many countries owe their freedom and way of life to the Canadian People . The USA is very fortunate to have Canada as it's neighbor.

The place I was born.
Till this day the Dutch still honour the fallen by having two minutes silence on May 4th every year, followed by a holiday the next day celebrating liberty.
During the war a boat in our neighbourhood, hidden in the river surrounded by tall grass, gave home to Canadian soldiers in hiding for the Germans, as well as other people in hiding. My aunt was in charge of their clothing. Surrounding families took turns dropping off food.

A terrible time we never should forget!
