Water heater crud

I just emptied our fresh water tank and water heater after returning from a recent trip, as we are planning on staying home for the next few months. After removing the anode rode to drain the water heater, I stuck my finger inside and felt quite a bit of "crud," grainy sand-like material built up around the inside of the drain hole. Any ideas how to clean this stuff out?

They work very well in getting the sediment out of the water heater.
