After Moab- Dixie Nat. Forest to Zion
Everyone scattered when the Great Utah in May Moab FB Rally ended that recent Sunday past, some to home, others on to other campsites. Gold Bar campground D, Arches, Dead Horse Point, the potash pits, was all really great stuff.... Nature showcasing what nature can do when she wants to do erosion.
From Moab we took our 19 in an arc up to I-70 then west and down Route 24 to Goblin Valley State Park. Goblin is well named. Was raining, foggy, which made the drive through this park absolutely, totally, cool. Couldn't help wondering if they filmed them old 30’s Flash Gordon episodes of “the Clay People” there. I really wanted to go walking in the mud amongst those melted goblins.
But, we moved on... This road is no place to break down. Three young CA women on a junket with a flat and no lug wrench flagged us down. They was on a curve, dug into a sloping, soft shoulder. After I got the donut on we noticed it was flat.
Much later, when Nancy and I got to Capitol Reef, supper and a beer in the Escape tasted great. Took the very scenic Capitol Reef 20 mile drive. There was no danger of a storm so I hiked the Grand Wash Trail. Saw erosion up close. Lunch, laundry, and gas at nearby Torrey, oh, and of course, peach pie at the Pie Store back at Capitol Reef.
Next day we are on Route 12 and the Dixie National Forest, on our way to Bryce Canyon NP. We took Route 12, which goes to 9,200 feet above sea level, although our GPS advised going around the Dixie. There was a snowstorm up there. Amazing drive, sure killed my mpg average.
Kodachrome Basin State Park would have been our logical next stop but we passed it up. Got to Bryce Canyon NP in time to find a site at the North Campground. Again, no hook ups. It got really cold there. Our Escape’s furnace made us happy as clams. Bryce gives their erosion a totally carnival take. See it at 7-8 PM. We had driven 696 miles since leaving Gold Bar campground D.
From Bryce we were bound for Zion NP. Bryce and Zion clearly are capitalizing on their popularity. The gauntlet of tourist attractions built outside their gates are booming. Zion was a fun drive-through, very long, with plenty of “wow” factor along the way. We must return. Couldn’t take a side trip to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The biggest erosion sample of all was still closed for the winter.
We stopped for the night at the Twin Arrows Casino, off Interstate 40 East of Flagstaff, AZ. There were plenty other opportunities for boondocking but we didn’t know it at the time.
On the final leg home to NM I averaged 13.5 mpg. Total 8 days dry camping, 1,894 miles, no issues, no complaints. Oh yeah, there was that annoying rattle in the Tahoe.

Wow Myron, I'm amazed that we didn't cross paths because we hit so many of the same places. I guess our timing was different though because after Moab we went to Mesa Verde.
Somehow we missed hearing about Goblin Valley, looks interesting. Oh well, next time.
Glad all went well for your trip.

We were on Hwy 12 last year. One of the more scenic drives of our trip. We may revisit in the future.

Hey, Jack.... no. Haven't found it yet --haven't had time/made time, to get under the car and search. (Relatives flying in from Jersey, mandates to construct new veggie raised gardens, etc.) No material issues ever manifested enroute home -for now it's still just a rattle.
The good news however is ...Momma's gotten so freaked out about it she has set aside some of my money and given permission to use it. Is this crazy or what? She actually believes an 18 year old car with a rattle is too old for comfort. I'm lovin' that.
So, -Having some fun. Looking around, maybe a 5 year old Tahoe/Yukon/Expedition /Durango -sized tow, with 4WD? Need that interior space. Want that beef. Flirted with hybrids for a few days but... ? Reading up on Edmunds and Consumer Reports, lurking on Ebay, even visited a dealer in Albq!
Thank you Patti. We're ready to Rally with you again. Ron, it was Jon V. whose posts alerted me to Goblin Valley. Wish I could be following you up to Ooosyuse.
