Alberta camping ideas requested

Hi Escapee's: We're headed for a family reunion in northern Alberta end of July. We are planning on meandering our way there and back by some as-yet-unidentified route (there's a reason we call our Escape "Tumbleweed"!) for about two weeks before and about 6-8 weeks after.
I'm pretty knowledgeable about BC options, much less so about Alberta. On our list are Writing on Stone, Cypress Hills, Slave Lake. We are OK with, even prefer, off-the-beaten-path. We do not (like to) make reservations, being OK with chance of filled campsites.
Prefer places with opportunities for day hiking and bicycling, both road & off-road (but not "mountain-biking").
Recommendations welcomed & appreciated.
Specific question: Sheep Creek? Never been there/know anything about it. Any comments?
Thanks heaps, and happy and safe travels.

Lotar & Wendy, look up: "The Camper's Guide to Alberta Parks" on the web.
So many nice campgrounds in there, you might want to extend your stay till fall. Enjoy your stay in Alberta!!

If you don't want to make reservations (completely understand), check the Alberta parks website - many campgrounds are reservation only - even if they're empty, you can't stay without a reservation.

Kananaskis has some really nice campgrounds - the ones in Peter Lougheed PP are awesome. Canyon and Interlakes campgrounds are first come, first serve. Writing on Stone is nice. Dinosaur PP near Brooks is down in the badlands and pretty neat.
