British Columbia Wildfire - Emergency

I’m wondering how my fellow BC Escapers have been dealing with our wildfires.

I’m safely tucked at home in Maple Ridge. Had been camping in the Interior but returned home just before the Lytton Fire. Had been staying at the Spirit Lodge in Osoyoos for three nights, returned home last Friday. Learning now that Spirit Resort and Nk’Mip Campground were evacuated a day or so ago.

Any camping plans are suspended till the next good rain …. I’m hoping everyone stays safe and makes good decisions.

We are in a suite at the Beach Club resort in Parksville on the Island. Blue skies and puffy white clouds here. Prime Rib Special on Thursday.

We will be heading into the Kootenays on the weekend, so far we are seeing the Cranbrook air quality index is 2, which is good. It is also at 2 in Calgary, although we've had a few bad days. We are watching that index.....

That's beautiful, come Sept we'll have some of that. This weekend we'll have some great mountain views - right now, all we have is this - that's me at the bottom of the garden ...pale and dilapidated from lack of get-aways and ocean views.........

I was planning on doing the Fraser Canyon / Duffy Lake Loop with a friend of mine on our motorcycles. But since the Lytton fire we've put that on hold till the middle of August or even till September. "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"

My daughter, son-in-law and 2 grandsons had gone camping in Barkerville in the Cariboo region last week, so I've been following their route as the fires expanded across that section of the province. They're in Delta now, and heading home to the island in a day or so, but it is very concerning how this fire emergency has expanded just this month.

They are asking people not to travel to, or in BC.

If live in the Lower Mainland…stay there.

If you live out of Province…stay there.

Now is not the time to be taking up accommodations that are needed by displaced persons that can’t go home or to be in the way if a fire breaks out where you plan to stay/camp.

We had planned to go to our cabin near Clinton, but the fire from Lillooet is just over the mountain and when the fire jumped the Fraser River it was to the North of us… Trip cancelled and we evacuated my mom from Clinton last week.

This week we were to have been in Wells Gray, due to so many fires around we are still home in Chilliwack..( where there was a fire at a nursery just down the road from us yesterday)

Hopefully late August or September our trailer will get out for its first trip this year.

You better stay on the east coast of the island because we now have a fire on the west coast just north of Sooke called the Muir Creek fire.

We will be travelling throughout BC next month. It sounds like as long as we stay out of evacuation alert/order areas, the tourism industry still wants and needs our business. The onus is on the traveler to keep up to date with wildfire information and be prepared to change those plans if conditions change. This article from yesterday lays out this logic. Obviously we will be steering clear of significantly affected areas such as Osoyoos and 100 mile house. Who knows, maybe it will rain before we leave!!

Thanks for posting that, common sense, and good advice. We are sure that most campers/travelers follow that.
