Question CA: Hwy 41 coast to 101 / 166 from 101 to the 5 - ?

Hi all

in California

How steep and slow and narrow is the Hwy 41 from Morro Bay out to the 101 to get to Paso Robles?

also - how steep and slow and narrow is Hwy 166 between 101 and the 5

thanks.

John

Hi,
These are old stomping grounds. We have pulled a trailer many times over the years. 41 is steeper and much more windy than 166.

We just took 166 to highway 5 yesterday and it is not bad at all. A bit windy near the 101 but after that it is fine. The road is good.

Would you hesitate to tow a 21’ Escape up the 41 from the coast to Paso Robles?

Don’t really want a white knuckle adventure.

Thanks

John.

John,
I wouldn't hesitate to tow over CA-41. There are some grades, and curves in the 30-35 mph range, but no knuckle biters. If anything, I think US-101 southbound down Cuesta grade between Santa Margarita and San Luis Obispo is a bit more white knuckle, mostly because it's a long straight steeper downgrade, with lots of people going too fast and not planning for the curve at the bottom.

That is our route more than half the time when heading out and is no problem. It is 17 miles from Atascadero to Morro Bay and the last five miles or so is flat. 166 is not nearly as good (or safe) as is the 46 which has been widened slowly over the last few years. One thing to be extra alert of though is approaching the 41 Y intersection. If going westbound from Bakersfield there is a descent just prior to that intersection so watch the downhill speed.

Edit: You can go 46 West from the coast near Cambria to Paso Robles. It is a bit straighter; 41 can be a shortcut depending on destination and the CHP will tell you the stretch of Hwy 1 from Cayucos to Cambria is one of the most dangerous in the county due to all the people rubber necking at the scenery.

I agree with John, he describes the road well.

This discussion is somewhat confusing and you need to look at a map. From I-5 to the coast you would take 41 if southbound in Fresno area. Going north from LA you would either take 166(more direct if going to Pismo) or travel about 35 miles north to the 46 towards Paso Robles.

Not sure what was confusing about my initial post......

I'm asking about 2 separate drives.

I was looking at a map when i posted my 2 questions...

I'm specifically interested in:

How steep and slow and narrow is the Hwy 41 from Morro Bay (north east) out to (Atascaro) then the 101 to get to Paso Robles?

I guess I should have also asked is the alternate route - Hwy 1 then 46 up to the 101 - is that less steep and twisty?

also - separate drive - how steep and slow and narrow is Hwy 166 between 101 and the 5 .

thanks.

What was perhaps confusing is someone recommended 41 from I-5 to 101, however coming from LA that is totally out of the way.

Hwy 41 West from Atascadero to Morro Bay is somewhat twisting, however I wouldn't call it steep. I believe the top of the summit is 1500'. Hwy 46 West is straighter and has about the same elevation climb, perhaps a little more.

Lastly, we have lived here 30 years and 46 East from Paso Robles was called "Blood Alley" from all the fatal car wrecks. Due to that Caltrans has been improving that road over the last five or so years to where it is almost all divided road from Blackwell's corner(10 miles west from Lost Hills/I-5) to Paso Robles. 166 is almost all two lane and the last 25 miles or so before the 101 is narrow and through canyons. As we live in Los Osos, it is a four mile difference when we are heading east to go to Lone Pine or Mammoth. Have to get over to Hwy 58 and it's either 46 from Paso Robles or 166 from just north of Nipomo. We much prefer 46 for safety and ease of driving as it is much straighter. Hope that helps.
