Calif. to Maine and back

Hello All,

We are planning a trip from Northern CA to Maine for 2 months in Sept and Oct.

We plan to stop in Denver, Custer State Park and the Adirondacks for sure. These stops will be on the way there. The return trip is still to be planned. About one month to travel there and about 1 month to return.

Please give us some suggestions on routes, roads, restaurants, rest stops or just things to consider.

Woodstock Farmers Market in Woodstock Vermont. Great breakfast sandwiches in a beautiful small town setting.

While there will be opened campgrounds, you will have to look hard for them in the Adirondacks after Labor day. If you are not in a hurry, the Seaway Trail along the southern side of the Great Lakes is a pretty drive.

I enjoyed a stop at the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake.

If you drive by Oswego before Labor Day, a stop to watch the sunset & enjoy a fish dinner at Rudy's is one of my favorites (and only 2 miles from home). Check the "Sides" menu - POUTINE ……$6.94

Rafter J Bar Ranch CG in Hill City, SD. Close to Custer State Park, MtRushmore, and the Needles. Twenty miles from Deadwood.
There is a large Buffalo roundup at Custer SP the last of Sept.
Many restaurants and stores close around this time until May.

Badlands NP in South Dakota is like being on the moon, breath taking. The KOA Lake Placid closes 1st week in October, beautiful fall foliage then.

Niagara Falls is worth a day, we liked 4 mile creek state park in NY while there. Fort Niagara is right before the park. We got a water front site cause we picked no hookups.

Blue Bell CG worked out well for us in Custer.

Sturgis and Wall Drug were ok.

Driving through the Badland NP was cool, it can be a few hour drive through or spend the night. We stayed at Cedar Pass cause it was hot and had power, but Sage Creek CG is free.

I liked taking 2ndary roads around the Chicago area, without going into details it was from 31 at Mansfield OH and 24 to Peoria. Mackinac Island is worth a day trip on the ferry, we took our bikes along or you can rent some. Nice bike trail around the island. We stayed a night at Straits State Park, it was okay.

Driving rt 1 along the Me coast is always an experience, at points it gets very crowded and slow.

You asked a pretty general question, if you could be more specific it'd help.



Taking the northern rt up around Lake Huron at Sault St Marie to Niagara Falls was neat too. You could also cross at Cornwall and come out right at the Adk's.

Moreau Lake State Park in eastern New York is worth a stop. Electric only, huge campsites and great bathrooms. We were there in September for an overnight stop and it was almost empty.

If you are retired military the campground at West Point is very nice.

I’m 20days into the same trip. Highly recommend Great Basin natl park on highway 50 in eastern Nevada. It’s at 7000 ft and the stars are amazing. No reservations but you shouldn’t have trouble in Sept. The John Wesley Powell museum in Green River, UT was great and there’s a stat park there as well.off the beaten path a bit is shady creek state park in Muscatine Iowa, backs of the Mississippi. Illinois state park near Zion, iL is on the shores of Lake Michigan.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation “NYSDEC “ operates the state campgrounds in the Adirondacks, the attached link takes you to their site from which you can look up lists of locations and closing dates of the campsites in the Adirondacks.Hopefully it might be of some use for finding campsites open in late September and October.
