Delaware Memorial Bridge and EzPass

I recently traveled over this bridge and to my surprise was charged $15 using the EzPass lane with my 17B instead of $6. Upon further research I found the following on the Delaware Memorial Bridge website:
As a vehicle enters a Delaware Memorial Bridge toll lane, the toll system reads both the number of axles and the vehicle profile. If a customer is towing a trailer or is operating a large recreational vehicle and enters a dedicated E-ZPass lane, the system may register the transaction at a commercial rate. To eliminate the potential for a misclassification, the DRBA advises customers to pay the toll manually. The E-ZPass transponder must be removed before entering the lane and placed in the read proof bag during the transaction.

In addition, all E-ZPass customers should always check their statements to make sure that the charges are accurate and immediately report any discrepancies to their customer service center. This alert does not apply to campers or RVs with dual tires.

I'd hate to pay manually, should be a better solution?

Hi: Mob2014... When we tow on the NY State Thruway we are charged not only for the extra two axles but over height too. Seems we take up to much air space. Alf

The Illinois Tollway has it calculated properly. When towing I pay double the automobile rate. Illinois gives a discount on the toll if you have the iPass, now EZPass, I believe it amounts to about 20%. On the other hand Florida with their Sun Pass does not discount, all you save is the aggravation of queuing up to pay the toll and stopping every six miles.

Hi Alf. That's why the promotional ad says "I (picture of heart) NY!"

As a Florida resident and Sun Pass (infrequent) user, I can tell you that it is very easy to avoid toll roads in Florida (there aren't that many except in Orlando where the State of Florida apparently believes it is OK to squeeze every possible penny out of people visiting the Mouse) and still make good time. As an added bonus, while the roads may be under construction to alleviate added traffic resulting from increasing population and seasonal residents, they are generally in much better shape than northern roads which are subject to deterioration from frost heaving, snow plowing, salt application, etc. But almost every road is generally straight and flat (i.e., boring to drive).

But the real question is why do we have toll roads in the first place? I was under the impression that all the taxes added to the price of a gallon of gas was to pay for road construction and maintenance. Guess the Government fooled me again!!!
