Hi Michele,
We are veteran home exchangers with 16 successful swaps so far (including two in Montreal), but we are new to trailering and have an Escape 19 on order for May. We will be interested to see what experienced Escape owners think about the idea of exchanging trailers.
Conventional home exchange partners often exchange vehicles already, so adding the trailer seems a logical extension, although from reading the excellent posts on this forum it's clear that many Escape owners naturally consider their carefully outfitted trailers to be a highly valued personal space, and rightly prize their tow vehicles, so not everyone will want to exchange them, just as some folks would rather not exchange their homes.
It's reassuring, though, that by exchanging similar trailers and tow vehicles, you would have someone using your unit who knows how to drive, park, and maintain it safely. As you mention, insurance would need careful attention, and crossing the US-Canadian border with a TV and trailer that you don't own would likely not be advisable.
Similar to your wish to tour OR, CA, and AZ, we live on Vancouver Island and would like to explore Quebec and the Maritimes with a trailer, but would rather not drive all the way across Canada and back to do so. Once we have some solid experience at trailering, trailer exchanges to Eastern Canada and US locales would be an interesting prospect.
We hope your intriguing idea attracts interest and opens up some new possibilities for Escape owners.
Brent and Cheryl.
