If what I read today was factual , the price of a barrel of crude on the open market is less than the cost of production in the US and Canada

It's ironic, low fuel prices would seem to make camping more appealing, but traveling right now does not seem appealing

Russia is trying to cause producers the US, Canada, and other countries to go bankrupt because it doesn't pay the bills anymore. If this happens on a large scale, they can slowly become the largest producer again. I read they break even at $42 USD, but are willing to take a temporarily loss to push others out of the market.

A couple of years ago I heard that breakeven was below $40 in the U.S. and decreasing thanks to improvements in drilling tech. And many years ago I read that the cost of production in Saudi Arabia was ten cents per gallon.

News last night said that Russia refused to cut back on production ( they are not in OPEC ) so Saudi Arabia said fine and opened the flood gates. Saudi Arabia can afford to dump oil into the market, but Russia desperately needs the money.

I meant ten cents per barrel. I'm really getting careless.

That's roughly 1975 Canadian prices from my recollection.
I don't think so... I recall paying under $0.40/L in the 1980's.

I'm thrilled to pay 8 cents a litre less for gas, until I think about my mutual funds having lost $18,600 ( on paper ) in the last couple weeks.

Hi: Doug2000... What diff does it make. You're still gonna go pick up that shiny new trailer Eh? When the tanks empty you need more and once full you can't save any for a rainy day!!!
My wifes car sat at home for 2 months with a tank full of expensive gas by todays standard. No room for any cheap stuff either. Alf

And I recall living in Saskatoon between 78-81 seeing gas at 25 cents a litre.

We are old enough to remember 25 cents a gallon in USA in the 60 ‘s and the oil embargo in the 70 ‘s ,oh my gas went up to 75 cents . We are paying 3.59 here with our taxes not helping . Pat

Because it is human nature. No matter what the price of something is, a lower price is always desirable. Everybody wants a bargain. But the reality is that complaining isn’t going to “fix” anything. Higher fuel prices are simply the cost of doing something you really want to do whether it is driving thousands of miles/kilometers to see Niagara Falls, or towing a trailer great distances at lower efficiencies to get to a specific location. Fuel is simply part of the cost of “doing business.”

I remember "a couple dollars worth" would fill up the car.....?? and nickel fountain sodas. Still, a gallon of milk costs more than a gallon of gas....??

When the price of commodities drops below the coat of production whether it be energy , lumber , farm commodities ,ETC it usually leads to much larger problems down the road.
I always thought it strange when the guy drinking the $8 / gallon bottled water complains about the $2 / gallon gasoline
I hope the oil industry returns to some reasonable level of normalcy before the economies of North Dakota and Alberta are damaged any further

Cost of fuel is just one thing in the mix . The cost is in everything we purchase . Pat

We had $.25 gas in the 70’s and an embargo that made us wait in long lines only to finally get near the pump and find out they ran out of gas.
It was inexpensive, but the minimum wage and salaries were peanuts compared to today’s salaries, so guess it’s all kind of relative. It seems like it’s harder to get by today, but we also spend $$ at a much more prolific rate than my parents ever did.

Very true Greg but there is a lot of manipulation of these prices going on . Pat
