Be careful riding your mountain bike in the desert 🌵. If you do that sort of thing. I was out on mine in 2020, had a site at Desert Trails, came across this guy in need of help. He was at Gilbert Ray. Took us about 20 minutes to De Cholla him.

We'll be at Kartchner Cavern before Christmas and in Tucson over Christmas if you can't hang around until February for Perry.

Pro Tip: Anytime you're hiking or biking around cholla always carry a good full size comb with a handle. A comb with a handle is the best tool to pull cholla off. It also works to get it off your dog when they discover cholla. You will also need small needle nose pliers or forceps to pull out individual spines that remain. Regular tweezers don't work very well for this.

Caution: When your dog gets cholla on their paw their immediate reaction is to try to kick it off, usually to the rear. As dogs like to walk out in front of their people this can result in high speed cholla flying in your direction. Watch for this if you see your dog has cholla. If your dog has gotten into cholla always check them for remaining spines too.

Good advice to be prepared for Cholla anywhere in the Arizona or New Mexico desert. I wasn't, -- my dog Ben got Cholla disabled --I had nothing and ended up using my wallet to safely grab and pull them nasty spines out of his leg - and mine. Nasty stuff.

Another tip when dealing with cactus encounters, carry iodine solution...
When you are trying to pull the very fine and hard to see spines after you have removed the larger spines use some iodine, or Betadine, on them. If you spread a thin layer of iodine over the area where the almost invisible spines are they will take on the iodine and suddenly become visible as little dark spots or hairs. Then you have a visible target to go after with your tweezers. Plus you've added some antibiotic to the area.
