Guadalupe Mountains NP

Just thought I would pass this along for anyone thinking about or planning on visiting Guadalupe Mountains National Park in far west Texas. This is a very remote park, has some wonderful hiking, but the RV campground is literally a parking lot, no hookups or dump station. It's been years since we've been there but were going to spend a few days there on a fall trip in a couple of months.

I just happened to see a comment on a Facebook group that GMNP's campgrounds will become part of the reservations system on Sept. 30. I checked out recreation.gov and yes, it states that reservations are required starting 9/30 - in the past this park was lightly visited but these days like everyplace else it is getting overrun with visitors....sigh.

If you do ever visit, site 25 is by far the best site for a small trailer, backs in on the end of the parking area and your door faces the mountainside. Here's a shot of our old trailer there years ago - we were the only ones in the campground then. There are also now several new BLM campsites off the highway to Carlsbad a few miles north of the park.

On our fall trip we planned to stay at Brantley Lake State Park near Carlsbad NM so we'd be close by and could arrive at Guadalupe Mountains NP early to hopefully get a spot. Looks like no one knows about the reservations system yet so I was able to snag good old site 25

We tried to stay at Guadeloupe NP in March, on a Wed. It was packed to overflowing. It resembled a tailgate party in the asphalt sea of people. Yes, the mountain and hills were very different from Texas. We had been looking forward to hiking. We knew it was first come first serve and thought that arriving before noon we'd be able to secure a spot. Never again, without reservations.

Thank you for sharing! We will see if we can fit it in in our plans when we visit the Big Bend this December…
