Heading down to the Lone Star State

Well, we are about 1 week from packing up our 5.0TA for its first long trek from Sudbury, Ontario down to San Saba, Texas which is approximately 1800 miles one way trip. We are really getting excited about leaving old man winter behind and enjoying some of the dryer warmer weather out in central Texas.

I would like to stop for a few days in Dallas just to hang out a bit and see some of the sites; never been there and so would like to get to know the place a bit. Does anyone have any suggestions for nice campgrounds to stay in near or in Dallas? Thanks for the help!!

On Lake Lewisville is Hickory Creek COE campground. It's near I-35 so would be convenient to getting into town. It's also about equidistant between Dallas and Fort Worth. Lots to see and do in both cities. We live in Flower Mound, which is about 30 mins from Hickory Creek and we've camped there a couple times.

What to see in Dallas

The Sixth Floor Museum. It's the old School Book Depository building from which President Kennedy was killed. At least that's the story.

San Saba! Get here as fast as you can! Spring is going to be amazing. Flowers are already starting to bud. The bluebonnets are gonna be thick. The white bass will soon start running at Colorado Bend State Park. Check out the LEAF festival in Llano. Don't know when your headed back north but I'd save the Dallas visit for the return trip. Folks down here think of Dallas as the frozen north! Spring storms are something else there also, although we get our share too.

Yes, San Saba area is fabulous (we love Llano), and you're headed there. But lots to see and do in Dallas, as well as in Fort Worth. Spring is beautiful, highly recommend the arboretum. Dallas is beautiful city. I hope people come up with other possible camping sites for you. I mentioned one in earlier comment, which is north side of Dallas, but there are also some campgrounds on the south side of town, including a state park.
