Mapping Issues

I am plotting a course from the Houston, TX area to Boise, ID via Las Vegas. I have a specific route that I want to follow and have created the route in RV Trip Wizard. The map has been exported to Google Maps and to the RV Life GPS. In spite of my efforts in creating a route, Google Maps and RV Life are happy to ignore the route that I have created and insist on dictating the route. This happens no matter what waypoints I put into RV Trip Wizard to force a certain route. I just wonder if there is something fundamental that I am missing. At this point, I am considering going back to paper maps, which I always have with me anyway.

I personally use nothing but paper maps. I am not appreciative of AI mapping, spelling correction, etc. it’s my contention that I was driving many of these routes before smart phones, multiple Gs, applications etc. I’ll figure it out for myself thank you. That includes my Highlander that asks me if I need a cup of coffee.
Paper maps and a compass will take me any where I need to go.

I use a combination of digital mapping along with a nice atlas. Something like Google Maps is great for getting around towns, taking me to a specific location, or alerting of construction or other road blockages. Nothing beats a map or atlas for route planning where you can see broad distances easily and can truly get a grip on your travel route.

I agree with Jim. You can’t beat the broad overview of a good atlas or map for the big picture, but Google maps for getting around town is just great.

Get the road warrior app, its what many truckers are using.
Don’t hit the navigate, use the optimize feature and it will remain a standard map for you. It allows you to route up to 8 stops for free, need more just delete the stop after you’ve been there. Hit optimize again and you’re now routed again.
The blue dot always lets you know exactly where you are.
As the screen enlarges it has even more features.

I'm with Dave on this one.

However, we do use Google to find the nearest, Costco or Tractor Supply, but I love the relationship of paper maps that you really don't get on a phone or laptop.

YMMV,

Perry

RV Trip Wizard is designed to choose RV friendly routes. I suspect that this is why it is overriding your choices.

I think you should make a printout from RV Trip Wizard and be done with it. You can't fight city hall or Google. Don't know what the GPS' problem is.

It’s not unusual for me to use 4 different mapping programs when traveling. I was coming through Connecticut and 4 or 5 routes wanted to send me onto the Merritt Parkway where rv’s are not allowed. As I’ve told a friend who is not computer literate - GPS is just a tool. People lose fingers on power saws, but it’s not the saws fault.

In Google maps you can see the whole route, and add waypoints to force your desired route. Waypoints can be additional locations in the destination list, or you can graphically grab the route and pull it to go through specific points. I have no idea how that transfers between Google Maps and other tools - it would depend on the specific software you are using.
