I've lived here for 25 years or so and to my knowledge have never visited a state wildlife area for purposes other than fishing, where a license has always been required anyway.

From what I've read, you need the license to camp at what was Lake San Luis State Park near Great Sand Dunes National Park. It is a useful overflow area for the national park that used to be a state park but closed when the water went bad.

The last time I was there the lake had pretty much disappeared. Now called the San Luis Lakes SWA. Free electrical hookups (as long as you have the license) and a dump station, but no potable water.

IMHO, hunting and fishing licenses are for hunting and fishing.

Perhaps a usage fee would be more appropriate.

I'm for any money going to any outdoor recreation activity, because all outdoorspeople benefit. Sure, a lot of hunting and fishing money goes to game animal surveys and hatcheries and such, but a lot also goes to keeping and improving habitat and access to habitat. Campers benefit from that habitat and access as well. Colorado may find it easier to have fewer types of fees and follow the same type of thinking.

I really have to agree with this point. I do not mind the money. We need to fund these things.

I suspect you’re exactly right.
The staff, fee structure, computer system, etc are all in place for fishing/hunting licenses and, from my experience, the system works well. A separate system designed for day users, campers, etc just adds to the administrative overhead.
Iron rangers need someone to collect the money, someone to count the money, Someone to audit the process, someone to chase down bad checks. An unnecessary expense. Onsite staff would be even more expensive.

A good decision in my mind.
