Portland OR and South to Redwoods

Greetings Escapees,
Will be picking up our new (to us) 21 in Portland, OR. Then heading south to see the Redwoods and Yosemite before heading east to our Atlanta home. What else should we see before turning east? Did Utah NPs and Grand Canyon last fall in our Casita. Looking forward to more room in the 21.

If you are heading West from Portland I highly recommend Nehalem Bay State Park, about a 2 hour drive out 26W toward 101 South. Our #1 local runaway with good sites (particularly the A or B loop) and beach access over the sand dunes.

So NM and AZ are nice. Bisbee. The mountains are very pretty Alpine, Sunspot Observatory, the area around Gila Cliff Dwellings inc. Gila Hot Springs. Then go down to Big Bend and across Texas is nice.

First, I totally agree with Nehalem Bay SP. One of my favorites since growing up in Portland. Other personal favorite state parks along the Oregon Coast are South Beach SP near Newport and Sunset Bay at the south end.


Depending on when you are picking up your trailer, I have fallen in love with the Cascade Lakes region south west of Bend. It is likely snowed in until spring, but it is amazing. Also likely snowed in until spring is Crate Lake NP. Beautiful.



If you like wine, the Willamette Valley, south of Portland, is wine country. If you like wildlife, the Oregon Wildlife Safari is pretty cool. If you like Shakespeare, Ashland is a must stop.


Conclusion, Oregon is an amazing place for adventures. But don't tell anyone.

Lots of great suggestions have already been made. You did not say when you are doing this trip, so Just a word of caution. You can experience ice and snow at higher elevations so plan accordingly and have an alternative plan jut in case you run into bad weather.

Thanks, we will be leaving Atlanta the first week of March heading to OR. SLC to Portland through Idaho will be different for this Southern boy.
