Hi: Telescopist... A pic. is worth a 1,000 words. At present the only hwy. from Port aux Basque is closed due to washouts. Looks like they'll have to crush up some more rocks. Alf

A few lashes with a wet noddle for that one.

It's too bad that there's not a road along the South shore allowing for a circular route. Unless time is a consideration because of pets it does make sense to come one way and leave the other.

Well that is certainly a concern. You are saying then that the citizens of Port aux Basque are more or less locked in place? At least by land?

Hi: Telescopist... Or lack of it!!! That's what happens in these one highway towns!!! NL. already has some of the worst potholes on the planet. That's because construction season is so short they only have time to half fill them!!! Alf

\Hi: Ron in BC... We took off along the south shore from Port aux Basque to the end of the pavement. Didn't want to start the ferrying from port to port. We decided to stop for lunch. WoW... I almost didn't have room for the "Figgy duff"!!! Alf

I don't know how many times. but judging from the number of your posts, lots, that I've seen your "St. Thomas, not BVI" location.

Since I just returned from BVI and noticed "not BVI" I thought, well that's true. There's no St. Thomas in BVI. It's in the USVI.

Hi: Ron in BC... So back on the road to PEI. Last time we were there we spent 14 days, 12 in the rain. At the campground the water was flowing out of the swimming pool and down the hill. The potatoes were well watered but now it's all water under the bridge!!! Alf

Regarding taking the ferry to the Rock: Can you just drive up and purchase a ticket at the staging area? Or is is better to purchase tickets to and fro in advance?

Hi: Telescopist... To guarantee a space on the long ferry for the rig and a twin birth w/ shower in 2019 we used advanced bookings, 3-4 months in advance. At that time we also booked the short ferry return day trip, and a campground not far from N. Sydney Nova Scotia. It took our friends many days to get a ride off the Rock after staying in NL. w/ their camper for 3 months. Alf

What the heck is a Figgy duff?

Had to google it since an empty plate wasn't enough of a clue.

Hi: Kirt... It was so delicious I couldn't stop long enough to take a pic. Since they didn't have figs in NL. they'd use raisins to make the steamed pudding. The hard sauce didn't hurt either but oh so sweet!!! Alf

You are helping... To be clear in my understanding, you booked a trip from N. Sydney to Argentia. Then drove counter clockwise around NL. You made a decision for how long you wanted to stay in NL. Based on that decision, you booked both the 'arrival' and 'departure' dates at the same time. You departed from Port Aux Basques. Have I got that about right or did I miss something?

In arguably the best historical novels ever written the author Patrick O’Brian, created two main protagonists – Captain Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin. They were prodigious eaters back in the day. It was not unusual for a meal to have 3 to 4 removes. The feast reached its apotheosis with figgy-dowdy (or plum duff). It is a gluttonous dough comprised of flour, suet, sugar, and depending on the state of the frigate’s supplies, prunes, sultanas, dates, currants, and raisins. And of course a glass of sherry to the King. It was life at its richest on the HMS Surprise back in @ 1801.

Hi: Telescopist... You got that right!!! We stayed on the Rock for 3 weeks and alloted so many days each to stay in various areas to tour like seeing the Puffins and the Root Cellar capitol of the world in Elliston.
Don't miss Nanny's Root Cellar Kitchen. The Cods tongues w/ scrunchions were delish!!! There's something about the fries in NL. that's indescribable too. Alf

Great images. Thanks! We'll book to and fro at the same time. Time to get the itinerary down on paper.
