Route south of Lynden, WA

Upon leaving the Lynden KOA after picking up our 21, we are considering driving through Olympic National Park and on down Hwy 101. Has anyone taken their trailer across the ferry from Ft. Casey State Park to Port Townsend? Tips? Suggestions? Cost?
Thanks!
Holly & Fred

It would be helpful to show your final destination as well as time of year for the trip....for different answers.

We picked up our 21 in late April and stayed in Lynden then took the ferry over to Port Townsend. We had a wonderful time taking the ferry. The ferry is a small one so be sure to make reservations- https://www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/ . Our cost was about $56. They base the fee on total length- with our Tundra 41’. Stayed at Fort Worden State Park - make reservations then onto Dungeness County Park near Sequim. We had a week of perfectly clear weather. We had the best time and totally avoided driving through Seattle.

I do that ferry frequently with my 15. Fare varies by length (30-40 is one rate, 40-50 another, so that varies according to your rig.) Fare also has a summer surcharge and the small portion that is for the passenger and driver has a senior discount (65) . Trickiest part is that they want you to arrive between 30 and 45 minutes before your ferry time and that can be hard to calculate if you are on the road. Staying one night at Fort Casey State Park may be an option if you can get a reservation, then you are right there and can easily time it.

You can't really drive through Olympic National park. You can enter it from a number of places, the two most famous being Hurricane Ridge (near Port Angeles) and the Rain Forest (SW corner.) You can hit both of those if you to north on 101.

We stayed at Bay View SP, on Puget Sound, for the 1st few days. It was our base for exploring Deception Pass and other points of interest on Whidbey Island. Then we went to Coupeville to take the ferry (no reservations) mid-morning. Just missed one, but were 1st in line for the next one, so we had front row seats to view the ocean in front of us as we crossed to Port Townsend.
Then we went north/west on US-101 to the Olympic NP for a few days (we had reservations there). Then we made our way down the west side of the Olympic Peninsula (on US-101) (without reservations) and camped for 1 to 3 days at various WA State parks (wherever we felt like stopping!). 2 weeks later we crossed the Columbia River, and continued camping in Oregon State parks.

Edit: by the way: We stopped in Bellingham to stock up on groceries and fuel. There's a Costco there, and in the older part of town, there is a Trader Joes.

We live in Bellingham and at least once a month take the ferry from Coupeville to Port Townsend to see family. Quite often our 19 is following us. We plan on two hours to get from Bellingham to the ferry terminal traveling down I-5 to Highway 20. There can often be traffic between Anacortes and Naval Air station Whidbey Island so planning on extra time is good. If you get to the Coupeville ferry landing too early then pull into the day use area of Fort Casey and enjoy the view.

Once off the ferry there are a number of camp grounds between Port Townsend and the Olympics. Fort Worden State Park is close to the scenic town of Port Townsend. Just past Port Angeles there is a county park by the name of Salt Creek that sits over the water and offers full hook-up. On from there to the coast and south are several State and National Parks to enjoy. Do keep in mind that this time of year and well into spring it is very likely to be wet in the Olympics and even snowy. You didn’t mention when you are picking up your Escape but note that we just got thru a period of temps in the teens, snow and winds gusting into the 50’s. Last year this kind of weather hit in late February. In both cases Port Angeles received over 2 feet of snow. Therefore plan your trip around the weather.

If you choose to take this route make a reservation at the least on the ferry (search Washington State Ferries). Park reservations don’t hurt either.

This is one of the reasons we bought a 5.0 TA. We live in Bremerton on the west side of Puget Sound so take the ferries frequently. Because the front of the 5th wheel overlaps the bed of our Tundra, the overall length is 38' thereby saving us the over 40' surcharge.

We also really like the 5.0 layout.

OOOps

WE forgot to mention...are picking up on April 27th and have decided to skip the ferry the return trip bks we are already staying at a cool AirBnB at Oak Harbor on the way UP to Chilliwack, then a nite at the KOA in Lynden and off wwe go camping our way down I-5, thru several NPs to Barstow, more NPs and 3 days camping near Scottsdale to visit relatives, then Grand Canyon, Sedona, Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe bend area and camping our way on east..along ole Route 66/I-40 and even a couple of overnites at casinos to round out our trip. Our last (planned) campgrond is presently flooded out by the risen Mississippi River, but should be OK by late May LOL Really looking forward to this trip...and seeing alot of God's handiwork.
