Stanley Idaho

We’re planning a trip to the Stanley, Idaho area in mid-late June this year. We’ll be in the area for a week or so. We’d appreciate any insight or suggestions on favorite and/or generally uncrowned camping spots. We’re happy to boondock, but would prefer to not drive on miles of dirt road to get to a favorite spot. Also, we’re not opposed to full hook ups if that works out. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions and thoughts.

There are numerous spots along the Salmon but you do have the highway there.

Look at Bear Valley Campground off of hwy 579 (take hwy 21 out of Stanley past the big bend).

It is the road to Boundary Creek which is the put in for the Middle Fork of the Salmon. You can camp there too, but it is a bit of a drive. Totally beautiful.

You can also check at the Forest Service ranger station in Stanley and get their thoughts.

Just down from Stanley is a small town called Challis (East of Stanley). They have a nice hot spring there (called Challis Hot Spring) and grassy camping. Nice camping. You can stage there the night before and soak. I would! In fact I do!

p.s. We love Arcata!

If you are into hiking - I wrote about trails in that area in the link below - post #18. We tent camped as well - but it wasn’t anything to write home about.

Redfish Lake is incredible, not to be missed if you can find a site in the area. In mid to late June, be prepared for mosquitoes and possibly very cool nights. Hopefully you'll be there before the largest crowds descend, but be aware the Stanley area is popular, and for good reason.
