Texas to San Diego

We’re looking for good, safe routes with camping from central Texas to San Diego. Would like to avoid the southern border areas (parts of IH 10), El Paso/Juarez area, and Baja CA. Any suggestions? Unique sites to see?
TIA!

Avoiding ElPaso

You'll need to head north towards Roswell NM.

Assuming you leave from Austin - head towards San Angelo, on to Big Spring, then when you get to Brownfield, turn west onto US380.

Not the fastest way to get to San Diego, and not the smoothest either, with long stretches of mostly nothing between gas stations.

I should add - you might want to see Palo Duro Canyon before leaving Texas. If you go that way, then you could opt for I-40 west rather than US380

A few miles north of Deming NM is City of Rocks SP. A stunning surprise in the middle of flat. Worth the effort.

Thank you for all of the suggestions. Now, I’ll sit down with a map, and plan a route. It helps to have some of the sites y’all recommended to focus upon.

Has anyone stayed at campgrounds along these routes?

We’ll keep that in mind. We’ve driven IH 10 before, with looonnngggg stretches of emptiness and lack of gas stations. One has to plan accordingly!

My son and his family were caught in a blizzard along that desolate route a few years back. Hway 10 actually had a long line of cars in a several-hour standstill! But everyone shared water, food, and blankets until the snow stopped and roads became passable again.
That gives new meaning to planning ahead!!!
