I keep looking at that darned cattle guard and wonder that Myron wasn't hurt worse. It could have been absolutely disastrous.

Speedy recovery to you, Myron.

The one thing I would really be concerned about in an area so close to the Mexican border would be drug smugglers. They would kill you and take your rig in an instant. Anyway, take care Myron. Time will heal both the leg and the pride. As for the cattle guard, most of the ones that I have seen have the rails closer together. Loren

That is quite a story! I always watch my step when walking over cattle guards, and now I'll be even more careful.

Speaking of cattle guards, for years westerners have told tales about naive easterners (usually eastern politicians) who think the term "cattle guard" refers to a person who has been hired to watch over cows.

Maybe the Canadians can comment on this, but I was driving a back road in Alberta and came on a sign that warned of a "Texas gate" ahead - which turned out to be an ordinary cattle guard.

Just another wannabe Texan. Alberta is full of them.

Yes, here in Alberta, Canada we go to great lengths to try to keep Texans out of our wilderness areas. Thus, the large number of "Texas Gates". I am sure that the operators of these gates will be happy to here that they can also be used to prevent cattle from crossing.

As a native mid-westerner, it took me a few months to figure out that a sign that says "free range" means that there are cows on the road.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Hope you are on the mend and able to get out and do some bird watching from an easily accessible location. On a lighter side, Rita and I were driving on a state highway in a relatively remote area of North Dakota a few years ago when we spotted an old white kitchen stove setting out in a field. The oven door was open and the appliance had obviously seen better days. You guessed it, in front of the stove was a sign that said. "FREE RANGE" . rimshot

I started reading the story and didn't notice who the poster was, but I just assumed it was Myron. My friend Bobbi would say, "What has a front has a back." You do such great exploring that I guess sometimes there are risks that don't work out quite so well. I'm so glad that you will be okay and I bet this won't dampen your enthusiasm. Speedy recovery.
