Travel to the Mid-West

We'll be traveling from western NYS (Finger Lakes area) to Iowa City next week (leaving Tuesday 9/21, return 9/28) and need some guidance. We expect to spend 2 nights on the road each way (mostly interstate; 86/90/80, etc.) and would like recommendations for camp grounds along the way and low stress routing around Chicago. Need to be in Iowa City by early afternoon Thursday.

Our preference is for quiet family camp grounds or municipal parks with full hook ups (no destination CG's). Also, last time thru the Chicago area, we headed 50 miles south on secondary roads to circumvent the nonsense on 94/294/80 around the city. We're in no rush.

Any info/advice greatly appreciated. Thanks,
Marv

We camped here last summer. Apparently some of the last old growth forest with 30-40 miles of Chicago. Real nice people. Click image for larger version

Cook County has several campgrounds, I believe that there is one south in Tinley Park.

We've done this trip several times in reverse, we have family in the Finger Lakes area. We always avoid Chicago, outrageous toll rates for trailers, especially multi axle. We've had good luck with Punderson State Park, southeast of Cleveland although that might not be far enough from Penn Yan for your first day's travel. We are staying at Lake Alexander campground about 50 miles south of Chicago in a couple of weeks on our last trip east this season. We have not been there yet but it gets very good reviews, small campground, privately owned. They have electric and water hook ups and a dump station for all to share. We spoke to the owners, very nice on the phone, reasonable rates.
