We've seen this Red-shouldered hawk, or its mate, out of our back window most every day.

That’s a very nice Red Shouldered Hawk photo. We have them in Iowa but they are listed as endangered. In the NE corner of Iowa we have some fairly large, well managed tracts of hardwood timber conducive to their nesting. I get a look at a couple every year when I’m up in that country trout fishing. Thanks for sharing.

I've seen Red Shoulder Hawks a couple dozen times on the California Central Coast, but far more common are the Red Tail Hawks, and Harrier aka Marsh Hawk, and Kestrels aka Sparrow Hawks....

While technically not Out My Back Window, we had a great sunset here at Imperial Dam LTVA:

Vermilye,
That is a awesome sunset picture. I love it when the sky does that. I'm sure the picture did not do it justice. Beautiful!

Not every day is sunshine and blue skies when you're on the road. Rain, rain, and more rain for the last two days in a part of the country that was already too wet. Very thankful for our warm and dry Escape.

Before the rains came, we were able to walk the Savannah downtown squares and Forsyth Park; the azaleas were in full bloom and spectacular.

Chisos Basin campground, Big Bend National Park, including a view looking down from the top of Casa Grande.

I'm posting this from the top of Casa Grande, the peak looming over the trailer in the second photo.

We spent most of our time at Big Bend NP in the Chisos Basin campground, but decided to try out a couple of primitive backcountry roadside campsites on this visit. They are pretty wonderful - most are within a mile or three down a well maintained dirt road, and they offer a chance to be in the middle of a wilderness area of the park with your nearest neighbor a mile away...pretty sweet. It was cloudy on this trip, but during clear weather the stargazing would be fantastic.

These are interesting places. Planning ahead being such a tenuous exercise in this current clime, we are still hoping to visiting Chisos Basin later this summer. Could you be more specific as to the location of these roadside campsites? Thanks.

Big Bend very recently added many of their primitive backcountry roadside campsites to the reservation system - they had previously been all first come first served. So this means that you can plan a visit and know you will have one....the flip side, of course, is that the chances of getting a site by just showing up are lower now. Two months ago they also changed Chisos Basin and added many more sites to the reservation system so now only a relatively small number of sites there are available on a walk-in basis.

Here's a link to the park's website listing all these sites. If you click on each one, it brings up a page that provides photos of each site. You can also look at them on Google satellite view and get a pretty good idea of how they are situated.

David:

Valley of the Gods was probably pretty empty for this time of year. Lots of open dispersed camping sites.

Unfortunately, at this point in time and for the foreseeable future, the only thing outside my back window is the interior steel wall of my three-sides carport.

While for the last few years we would have accomplished three camping outings and two trips to Fort Wayne in April and early May and be making preparations to leave for Osoyoos, this year is real different.
For a little visual amusement, I’m still feeding birds, I’m recreation mowing my yard ( don’t need it just feel like taking a ride) working on the establishment of a much bigger garden, and organizing my literature and treasures and maintaining some slightly neglected equipment. Meals are better than they have been for a long time because we are cooking our own. Haven’t been near a slow food joint in months. They have not curtailed the manufacture of beer but I stocked up so haven’t needed more of that vital commodity or distilled spirits either. Rita has been making some masks and keeping up with the grandchildren and her friends and her sister. Not very exciting, but hey, neither are a lot of unfettered retirement days. Who thought you could feel a sense of accomplishment changing a fuel filter on a Stihl 029 chainsaw without losing the pickup hose into the miniature abyss of the fuel tank? I have met friends for coffee every Tuesday morning for several years. I did not go for the coffee but for the conversation. I miss that. I’m cheering for the vaccine scientists but also realize that these things take time. Patience is a virtue.

Yucca whipplei, has tough, sword shaped leaves that can cut you. Member of the Agavaceae cactus family. I have seen it produce underground runners that pop up at the trailer pad. Talking serious gloom there. Note bed is stripped. Besides the Yucca, out my back window a neighbors’ red pickup is exotic as it gets.
