We see them every time we are in the southern sector of Teddy Roosevelt National Park, along with deer, elk, turkeys and some up close and personal views of the Buffalo. The Buffalo are especially predominant in the northern sector.
I worked a lot in that park, never saw the horses but I did have a heard of buffalo come up to hear me play the fiddle at the North Unit.
Often times it is no shoes, open sores, nursing, proud or brazen behavior. They do not usually look like domesticated horses.
Seeing feral horses come from domestic stock, they do look a lot like domestic horses.

Here in Alberta, about 20 years ago, there was a major culling of feral horses near Suffield, which is a Canadian Forces Base. Some folks adopted but most had to be put down. A lot of the problem was because folks would release their unwanted horses there instead of dealing with their disposal in other ways.
