That's a lot of snow for California.
The Donner area has had 16 FEET of snow this month, which is really quite a bit of snow, considering it was only about 2 weeks of actual storm with clear weather in between.

on the coast at my location, I got about 10.5 inches in December. wettest month in a while, but we've been in a drought for years. rain year (oct 1-) is a bit over 20 inches. thats better than we've had in years.

A fact to keep in mind: -40 is the same Celsius or Fahrenheit.

When we went south, we always took the coast highway for the lack of snow, plus both Oregon and California have a 55mph speed limit for towed vehicles on I-5.

Haven't been south since I almost died from rhabdomylosis in 2016 in Henderson, NV.

You're all lucky that you don't have a dog that needs her own Snowbrella and grass to sniff. I think Gertie's thinking, take me back to San Bernadino, they don't have cold and white stuff like this.

-25°C (-13°US) here right now, but we are supposed to get up to a high around freezing next week. Very tropical. [emoji16]

We have been through a very long and cold spell in Calgary.

Drove 300 miles south from home today enroute AZ, was -26C at home, here in Watertown SD it's -27C, beginning to wonder when we might see warmer temps. I thought in the northern hemisphere when you went south it got warmer!

Good thing we didn't leave yesterday as planned, blowing snow on the highway yesterday witnessed by seeing eight vehicles off the interstate before Fargo ND. You would think people in ND would know how to drive in these conditions, unlike those in VA.

Today in WA

I-5 is closed in Lewis County in both directions. A reminder, all of the mountain passes are also closed. Here's the alert from WSDOT. Download WSDOT's App for updates.

WSDOT ALERT: Both directions of I-5 CLOSED in Lewis County between Grand Mound and US 12 south of Chehalis due to flooding

DATE/TIME: Jan. 7, 2022, 7:45 a.m.

LOCATION: Both directions of I-5 CLOSED in Lewis County between Grand Mound and US 12 south of Chehalis due to flooding

DESCRIPTION: A 20-mile stretch of Interstate 5 in Lewis County between Grand Mound (milepost 88) and US 12 south of Chehalis (milepost 68) is now CLOSED in both directions due to rising floodwater from the Chehalis River near 13th Street in Chehalis (milepost 77). There is currently no estimated time for reopening. Travelers should delay travel until flood water recedes. Current weather forecasts show floodwaters are expected to recede on Sunday.

I worked a lot in North Dakota in my career in the National Park Service. Usually the issue was wind versus snow. I saw many a semi blown over on its side, much of ND has no wind breaks.

Anything close to a cross wind is BAD, for any fairly tall vehicle. Was in my little 1980 Toy truck with a homemade little taller in the back than cab wooden Cap I built. On hard packed snow, maybe 35/40 mi per hr. A cross wind spin my truck's back end 45%, & now towards on coming traffic(heading towards a friend!!). No braking, I spun the wheel end up back on my shoulder heading for a telephone pole. Spun the wheel & fished around it. Hitchhiker I had picked up, was white! One cat life down.

Not sure where to start.

The storm that started on the day after Christmas gave us about 18” of snow over two days.

Also took out several thousand trees in the Sierra foothills and power to 65,000 PG&E customers. At one point, PG&E reported 5,000 distinct damage sites.

The picture of our driveway was representative of scenes everywhere we looked on the morning of the 27th. We have been on our backup generator for 13 days and counting at the rate of 2 gallons of propane per hour except for the 8 hours we were down when the rotor brushes gave up. Luckily, we found a technician and brushes..

Target for getting power up is 1/11/2022.
