Just heard I80 is closed in Truckee, due to white out conditions. Be careful out there....

It's winter time, for sure. Methinks a lot of North America will have to take care. Friends in Oregon are complaining about the weather, which is worse than they usually have though nothing near what it is up here.

High in Calgary today is forecast to be -27°C, tomorrow -28°C (-16.6° and -18.4°US). I think I will stay inside mostly, maybe paint the interior of the garage I am building. And to think up to the 23 I was outside installing the Hardie Board until a snow storm hit.

We're getting slammed again in Carson City, NV. 45+mph winds, snow, ice, etc. In the past 3-weeks we've received ~3X more precipitation than we got from January-November! La Nīna!

I'm still coming down here in Port Angeles Washington and I just shoveled out at least 12 in of snow this morning.

Built a humming bird feeder heater. It's just coping, liquid in the base but frozen above. Yesterday the little guy had to peck his way through mounds of snow on the "flowers". Love the little hummers but hate the record lows we'll have this week.

i was given a HB feeder heater. Having no where to plug it in, I returned it and got another feeder. Now, I just have one inside the house, thawed, and one outside, and I rotate them as required.
There is a Anna's hummingbird, currently perched nearby, guarding it from others.

Luckily I had an exterior outlet and with an old incandescent night light a feeder heater was possible. But I just insulated it with an old sock because the over night lows are going even lower than last night.

He was on it again before I was in the door. Those guys are so feisty. Love it when they buzz you and go eyeball to eyeball.

That's the exact same thing we are doing.

This is a picture a friend sent me of his very crowded feeder

I've seen an Hbird feeder with a half dozen birds feeding at the same time, but those in my yard are very aggressive. Spend more energy fighting to defend the feeder than they get from it.

I tried to upload a video For what ever reason it won’t let me. I have four feeders and at last count 30 hummingbirds give or take. Once you get that many birds they seen to calm down and are more likely to be civil. It’s almost impossible for the dominate male to control 29 other birds and get to eat at the same time.

Makes sense. Where do I get 28 more hummingbirds?

I'm guessing Anna's?

I guess that's as good an explanation as any. Maybe there's a critical mass in the number that have to show up at the same time.

I've never had that. Just dazzling displays of aerobatics as two burn up huge amounts of energy chasing each other around. Fun to watch though.

I'm not digging through the snow to show you, but I had rhubarb poking through the soil the other day. That's weeks after a friend dug it up and moved it to Pitt Meadows. He must have missed some.
