I have often wondered if the bed in the TA is not colder since it sits directly on the floor, albeit carpet but still uninsulated whereas the 21 has the foam underneath outside as well as 15" of dear air space for a buffer zone? Any owners care to comment on the temperature differential in the winter?

There is insulation under there, I had asked Reace once upon a time. Carpet, plywood on a frame to level the floor filled with insulation, from there either plywood or the fiberglass shell, the plywood being over the front storage.

I think it's colder up there cause you are surrounded by 3 walls and the roof with minimal insulation, not to mention an 18x18 plastic bubble with no insulation unless you add some. A small fan helps to distribute heated air from the main cabin. Close the curtain, if you add such, and you get almost no heat.

We have never worried about being cold up in the 5.0 bed, in either trailer. We like sleeping in the cool - we turn our house thermostat down to 17C at night. In fact we're glad our newer 5.0 has the awning style single pane windows in the loft.

Never really noticed it being any colder in the loft than rest of trailer, but I do like it colder than warmer.

Perry, I don't think that trailer exists, as there always seems to be a lot of compromises made with any trailer. I look at it as which trailer more closely fits your needs. Memories can be made with just about any of them.

For the most part there is no issue at all, but in extreme cold or hot in can get uncomfortable. Both Lisa and I like to sleep cool, with our thermometer set for 16°C (61°F)at night, but when well below freezing at night it can get a bit chilly. The fan I installed as been great though to circulate the heated air up into the loft. When camped in Butte Montana earlier this year we likely would have got a room without it. Temps when we set up in the evening were -13°C (8.6°F) and dropped a bit more by morning.

For the most part we love our 5.0TA. The interior layout and all the storage there works fine for us. We both agree that the 21 would not fit our camping lifestyle. I do agree that though there is a bit more square footage of floor in the 5.0TA, the 21 does look more voluminous inside. I have made a few tweaks that have really made our trailer our own, with more planned for 'sometime'.

Most of the pluses others have listed I find too, so no need to get into them.

The biggest issue with the 5.0TA that I have come to find, is the lack of vehicular storage is an issue with not having use of all that bed space (or rear of an SUV space) due to how it is hitched. I know I don't need all the toys I want to bring along, but I love to have my duffle bag of fishing gear and rods, my inflatable canoe, our bikes, the LP fire pit, and so on, for when we do extended trips. If Jasper did not command the entire rear seat in my SuperCrew cab, I could likely fit most of my stuff back there, but he is not even 11 yet and in great health so will be on trips with us for many years to come. Still, as much as I grumble about this, it is nothing that stops me from going.

As far as I've been able to tell there is no "perfect" camper, trade offs to all of the styles.

Thanks! We managed to get our deposit in on Nov. 30 to lock in the 2018 prices. Now I'm excited to have the Maple option. We will be heading to Chilliwack beginning of Jan to finalize our build sheet by the Jan 23 deadline.

Hello! I have a 5.0 TA on order and am shopping for a tow vehicle. I'm leaning towards the same truck as you, a Ram eco-diesel. Is that a storage box in the front of the bed? I'm also wondering if the Ram box option on the truck would interfere with the 5th wheel hitch at all?

They say not to get Ram boxes if you will have a fifth wheel - on sharp turns when the trailer swings well to one side the kingpin arm can hit the side of the Ram Box.

I don't have my hitch installed in my 2019 Ram yet but I have moved the toolbox from the old truck, it sits in front of the wheel wells in our 6'4" bed and leaves plenty of room for the hitch rails. We had this arrangement in our old truck with a small fifth wheel and I really liked the secure storage that the toolbox provides. In a short bed truck, however, there wouldn't be enough room in front of the wheel wells for a toolbox like this.

You may notice the toolbox is sitting on a wood base to elevate it for easier access - it's 20 years old back when bed rails were shorter, in my old truck the top of the toolbox was even with the bed rails.

Storage box up front should not be an issue other than you lose some space to the box. Have one on my Tundra although I have to admit I removed it before my big trip last year in order to maximize space. The box will not interfere with the hitch.

Pretty sure the Ram box set up would not work out with the 5.0. I have a hard folding tonneau, Fold-a-Cover, with built in tool box in my F150 with 6.5’ bed that works great. Carry tool box and bunch of other stuff securely and dry. And when not towing a lockable cover over entire bed. They may have 1 for the shorter bed but if I where looking for a truck I’d opt for the 6.5’ bed.

We are looking at the 21' and the 5.0. Can anyone tell us approximately how much shorter the 5.0 would be than the 21' with a 2018 Chevy 1500 Silverado crew cab with 5.5' bed?
We really appreciate this forum and everyone sharing their advice and opinions. It is really helpful while trying to decide which Escape is right for us.

Hitch to bumper the 21' is within mere inches as the same length as the 5.0TA. There's two measurements that may make a difference to you. Overall towing length the 5.0TA is shorter as the loft is over the bed of the truck. The 21' has an interior length of 18', while the 5.0TA is 20' interior. The extra length in the 5.0 is taken up by the stairs, but also provides a hanging clothes closet as stock. The bathroom is smaller in the 5.0TA because it's a side bath, but the loft accommodates a queen size bed, while the 21' is a double.

The 21' and 5.0TA are essentially the same length from bumper to coupler or pin, but the 21' hitches behind the truck's bumper (a few inches to a foot or more from the face of the hitch receiver, depending on your style of hitch), while the 5.0TA about three feet ahead of the face of the bumper. That makes the overall length difference of the combination about four feet.

A 2018 Chevy 1500 Silverado crew cab with 5.5' bed is 230.03 inches (19'2") long overall, and the trailers are about 21 feet long, so the overall lengths are roughly 41 ft for the Escape 21 (or a bit more with a long hitch), and 37 feet for the 5.0TA.

Exact numbers depend on hitch configurations, if you need to get closer for something like a critical parking space length.

For us, the 5th wheel decision was driven by a few different factors. Not necessarily in order of listed importance:

1. Overall shorter length vs. the same length bumper pull trailer. Our driveway is gravel and has a good downward slope. At the bottom it makes a sharp (<90 degree) turn which the rig has make. While I could do it with my previous rig which was approx. 40 feet, it was a challenge. Having 3-4 feet less length to contend with is significant.

2. I’ve never towed a 5th wheel but my understanding is they tow much nicer and are more stable than a bumper pull. I also hear that, while different, they are easier to back into sites, etc.

3. The fact that the 5.0 has a full-time, full-sized queen bed out of the main living area sealed the deal!

Our "short" Yukon is 202 inches so that could make the difference 2"+ shorter, however it seems to me that people who want 5th wheels want them and those of us who aren't necessarily into pickups not. Good to have choices

I asked Susan whether she thinks a 5.0TA would appeal to her and she asked " I would have to go down stairs backwards in the middle of the night?"
