I hope this worked out good for Robert, I know he sure poured a lot of time and resources into the development of this trailer. I chatted with him a fair bit off the forums, and he certainly is a nice, helpful guy.

Might be the best April Fools post of the day. LOOKS real... But hard to imagine Airstream has really been interested in growing their business by establishing a molded fiberglass line...

I don't think this is an April Fools joke. I've sent Robert an email congratulating him and wishing him well on his next venture. Hope he stays connected to the all-molded-towable group as he has some terrific ideas.

I just heard from Robert. Yes, this is true. He'll be making the official announcement on FiberglassRV sometime over the weekend.

Very interesting acquisition. It will be interesting to see what Airstream with it's production and marketing capability can do with the pricing. If they can get that down below $20K with a dealer network, etc. it could really go well.

In the spirit of wild speculation that has occurred on this forum recently, do you think they will make the new Nest out of aluminum and rivets?

I was wondering the same thing Glenn, but I think they want to move to "hail resistant."

I assumed that this was an April Fool's joke (less than two seconds after seeing the thread title) for two reasons: - It's April 1st
- The Nest is a trailer design and set of moulds, rather than a company with established manufacturing capacity and market share.
- Airstream isn't even really a company - it's just a brand. The company is Thor.
As it turns out, there is an "Airstream, Inc.", which is a subsidiary of Thor Indusries, Inc. Either it is true, or Robert is stringing Donna along.
If it's true, it's a match made in heaven: the manufacturer of the most expensive travel trailers, who are obsessed with style over function, acquires a fiberglass design which will be expensive to build, and has a design driven almost entirely by style. Will this be the first $50,000 small moulded fiberglass trailer? For comparison, the least expensive current Airstream - which is only sixteen feet overall - starts at US$44,605. Airsteam is not a cost-effective manufacturer.

Despite what probably looks like a negative tone, I don't think this is a bad thing. There are clearly people who will pay the price of two decent new compact cars for a travel trailer, and this is a nicely designed option for them. It's like having $150,000 luxury cars or million-dollar exotics available - irrelevant to normal people, and lousy devices for transportation, but part of the variety which makes life interesting.

Nah, I've tried following some of that, and just shake my head. I think pharmaceuticals are required to come up with those methods!

Methinks Robert hit the jackpot on this acquisition. Here's hoping his obsession with quality and detail isn't lost by a big company.
