Question Awning screens sun shades

For those of you with a manual awning in the 21 foot escape, have you used any sun shades or screens that attach to the awning?

I’ve read a few threads about those independent pop-up screen tents, but we were looking for something to attach to the awning or the bars. We would like an “extended room” sort of scenario outside of the door of our trailer.
Is the awning a standard size for such an attached screen room?
What about attaching just a side sunshade ?
How does it attach to the awning?
Is this something that would be done during the build?
Thanks!

I use a sun screen, but use it as a sun screen, not a room although it does provide a lot of privacy. I do slide it out from the awning groove to cover one of the ends as needed, affixing it with spring clamps. It works great for it's intended purpose, kind of bulky when packing it away.

I know of some screens that attach to the roller if it has an available slit to slide in.

That's what mine does. I use gallon water jugs tied to bungee cords at the ground side if it's breezy. A side panel would be nice to have, but I don't.

Screens/shades

Yes, I can certainly see the benefit of having a sunscreen, and would like to acquire one or two. It offers up a bit of privacy, too. Thanks for the link, Padlin.

For both the sunshade or the screens, could anyone post a photo of their attachment and ways to secure it on the ground?

For the screen room set up, where did you find the screen? Is there an entire awning-attached system out there? If so, any links or brand names would be helpful.

I read somewhere that Escape used to offer the attachable screen rooms.
So, if anyone has an older Escape with a screen room, does ETI have an attachment system sewn in or otherwise built on the awning?
Thanks!

The older screen room slides into the slot in the awning roller. Rods slip into the sides to hold them up and front and sides zip together. There are snaps to fasten it to the trailer and an apron all around.

I've never fastened it to the ground, but only used it maybe twice in eight years.
Side curtains made by Gabi, another member here, are more useful, IMHO.

I used mine once withy first E19 and sold it with the trailer. A PITA to put up and down, thus little use.

You'll probably leave the front "door" unzipped so you can go in and out easily, which makes it easy for the insects to get in too. On the other hand, it's much easier to swat them when they are trapped inside the screen.

The photos and further explanations help quite a bit. Thank you!
Yes, It does sound like a labor-intensive set up.

I do like the snap system that Gabi developed for the sunshade.
Maybe I could DIY the appropriate screening material to snap on like this?
It may not keep all of the bugs out, but could help. It would also keep my little Chihuahua corralled inside.

I’ll contact ETI to see if they still would do the necessary alterations on the awning rods to accommodate screens.

If anyone else has the screen room set up, I’d love to hear about more opinions.

Or perhaps someone did a DIY screen room out there and wouldn’t mind sharing their system/mods? Thanks again!

It seems like screen rooms for trailer awnings pretty much went away for all brands of trailers once the Clam (and knock-offs) became popular.

Donna, are those easier to work with? Do they have the approximate same size?

Whoops...never mind. Just took a look at the quickset tent, 9 feet across. It says it’s a 45 second assembly. Hard to beat!

We had a screen room with our17B. I don’t think it had ever been out of the bag. It was still brand new.

I prefer our dining shelters to the one that attaches to the awning. There is no room under the awning for a picnic table where I barbecue. I usually have room for a couple of chairs in the dining shelter too if it’s raining. If I cooked on the barbecue under the awning, the smoke would go in the trailer. Also we can set up the dining shelter in minutes.

The only downside of the quickset screen houses is the "folded" up size.

Another downside could be the weight. The upside is you would only need to take when you think you'd use it.

Yes... most things have their upside and downside. I was concerned about the weight and set up of an independent tent due to my physical disability. But I suppose attaching a screen to the awning would also be difficult for me.

The bulkiness of the tent is a concern too. Just have to figure this all out...

If you have the new power awning I'd imagine you have to reach up to the roller and thread the screen in the slot. For the manual awning you can pull out the awning and thread the screen before raising it up to height with the arms.

I do not think it is recommended with the power awning due to the automatic retraction feature.

I have this for a beach blanket, but recently clothespinned it to the top rail of my electric awning, folded so it didn't hit the ground. I don't think it's too heavy to cause damage, and since the awning side was facing west, it provided more shade in the afternoon. It stuffs into the pocket that's attached. If it were a little breezy I might put a couple of clothespins on the bottom edge for weight or tuck something lightweight into the sandpockets. It obviously won't keep bugs out but does provide more shade. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...0?ie=UTF8&th=1

edited to add you will need a small footstool or ladder to be able to reach the awning.

What happens if your awning retracts due to a gust of wind with the blanket attached?

I'm right there so i suppose if i give it a tug, it'll come unattached. or maybe stop it for the moment with the remote? thanks for that question, now i have a plan. i might test it out by retracting with one of the clothespins attached, ready to stop if there's trouble. maybe the pins will be dislodged....
