Harvest Hosts Sale

I see that Harvest Hosts memberships are 20% off until December 1st. If you're like us and don't have your trailer yet, you can buy a gift card for membership at the sale price, then use that gift card when you're ready. (That was a suggestion from Harvest Hosts.)

Curious, has anybody used Harvest Host. I had never heard of them till only weeks ago and now I’m getting blasted by advertising.

I just joined this year thinking it might come in handy. Used it twice on the way to Montana in August. First night at a brewery in NE that happened to be the night with a food truck and live music which was fun. They closed at 9 pm and the rest of the night was peaceful and quiet even with four other trailers/RVs there.

Second night at an alfalfa farm in WY in a field where sandhill cranes landed in the evening. Beautiful setting. My dogs were allowed off-leash and had fun playing with the owners’ dogs.

Worked out very nicely for me but not sure how often I’ll end up using the membership.

I’ve used them some. There are times when I can’t find a campground location where I want to stay. (I try to keep towing distance to 300 miles per day) Between staying at a Walmart or a Harvest Host (winery, farm, brewery, etc.) I’ll take a Harvest Host every time!

There is a recommendation to spend $20 at each stay.
Maybe a good deal if you would spend that much anyway.

This fall we used our Havest Host membership while enroute to Maine and back. We spent a total of 6 nights in Winerys, Farms, and Breweries, each welcoming and happy we were there. What I thought was great, these stops forced us on to the back roads and we met people in these communities.

We use "i overlander" as an app much of the time. It generally does not steer us to Wal-Mart's but some unusual spots. We also like the app UC, Ultimate Public Campgrounds. I overlander is a free app, UC costs $3.99. We generally spend far less than $20/night and end up with great views, quiet locations. In the West there appear to be fewer Harvest Host sites than the East. In our 140+ nights of camping we have never stayed at a KOA, or other mainstream commercial campground.

There are only two spots within about 400 km of Calgary, and very few in Canada at all. Though I like the idea of this service, the annual cost might really only be worth for a year or two when we plan on doing lots of distance travel.

A couple years ago, when the big solar eclipse happened, we couldn't find camping or any other accommodations for that matter. Several weeks before the actual event, I joined Harvest Hosts and found a vineyard in Oregon right in the path of totality. It was also our 25th anniversary. Totally awesome experience, and fun adventure. I haven't used it much since then, but I think it's worth it.
