Price of shipping trailer has gone up 33%

We were planning to have our trailer shipped to us in the US southwest rather than putting an additional 2000 miles on our TV with pick-up in Chilliwack. Had run the numbers and shipping, while more expensive than pickup, was not prohibitively so. Yesterday in talking with ETI, we learned that effective September 15th, the price for shipping a trailer has gone from $2.25 per mile to $3.00 per mile, a 33% increase. The shipping option no longer makes sense, at least for us. I only post this as an FYI in case others are not aware of this price increase.

Your return trip would be more like 3,000 miles (4,860 km according to Google Maps). So would it not be only a good 1,500 miles shipped? It could make a great holiday for you if you could swing the pick up yourselves. We will be doing near a reverse trip again next January ourselves.

We are giving it a very strong consideration, and likely will.

The increase in price is not surprising since fuel has increased accordingly.
We had our first 2 Escapes delivered and we picked up our last and plan to pick up our next. The trip is an adventure in itself and Chilliwack and it's surrounding area is beautiful. We plan on picking our 2019E21 the week of the rally and continue onto Osoyoos. If anything is not right, I'm sure it can be fixed while there. All in all, a 2 week trip and our 4th trip to Osoyoos, which is one of the prettiest locations we have ever camped in.

The heads-up is good, especially for those in areas very far from the Escape factory.

2,694 kilometres (or 1,674 miles) each way (to the middle of Abiquiu), according to Google Maps... so $5,022 one-way at the new price. Is that Canadian dollars, since ETI is quoting it?

It seems like a lot, but I'm not really surprised, especially if the carrier has to make a return trip empty (and so not able to charge for the return distance).

It's likely cheaper to operate your own vehicle for the round trip than to pay someone for one way, but that doesn't count the value of your time, or consider accommodation costs along the way (especially on the drive to Chilliwack, without a trailer to stay in).

That just raised the value of the rare Escapes that come up for sale here on the East Coast.

Sometimes it's for the trip and sometimes it's for the destination and in this case it's Coyote Beach. Love the place.

I'll start a "Baja 2019" thread later in Oct. We're usually doing that trip on our own but it'd be fun to travel with others.

That sounds like a great idea, Ron. We could at least have a few of us meet of for a part of the journey, it doesn't have to be the whole trip.

maybe a new business for those who really like to drive, see the country, and have an Escape behind them (even if it's to be delivered!).

Enforcing of new laws

Hello,
One of the main reasons for the price increase for the delivery is because of the new electronic monitoring they are enforcing in the US beginning of 2018. It was common practice in the trucking industry when they kept paper logs that a driver would just have two logs so he could fudge hours driven (you would think people in charge of monitoring this could keep up with miles but that's a different story in itself). Now once a driver gets in his truck and starts driving the clock starts ticking, does not matter if he is in traffic, stops for two hours for an unload that clock keeps ticking and when it gets to 10 hours they have to stop I think for 8 hours (not sure on this without research). I'm in the office furniture industry and I represent several Canadian manufacturers and the further you are away the more this is effecting the cost, for longer runs I understand team driving has become more the norm. I feel quite sure this to has also driven up the delivery cost for Escape.

Safe travels to all,

Steve

I ordered my Escape back in 2013. Didn’t really consider the delivery cost too much at that time - I wanted that Escape! As the build date approached, I called to get shipping cost. After hanging up the phone, the thought became what if I paid myself for picking up the trailer? Started retirement with that trip. 6 days up, 9 weeks back - one of the best decisions I ever made! Also had the bonus of going from a tent camper (real tent, no wheels) to an experienced rv’er! So far this year, 55 nights in the Escape.

Pick-up Escape

We just picked up our 5.0 TA last month. We live in Wisconsin. So it was a trip. In retrospect, I am glad we made the trip. Not just for the vacation part; but for meeting the Escape Staff. Our orientation was done by the company owner and we got to meet with the staff who built the trailer. They provided us with many insights that we would not have gotten if it was just delivered. I would suggest new buyers make the trip.

I picked up both my 17 in 2011 & my 21 in 2017, driving from upstate NY. Staying in motels on the way to Chilliwack did a good job of reminding me one of the reasons to appreciate having a travel trailer! I did have the advantage that, being retired, I don't have a time commitment problem.

Since I planned to stay in the west 7 months after picking up the 21, I did a one way UHaul trailer rental for my "stuff, leaving it in Sumas.

I picked up my used 5.0TA in Las Vegas....from Southern VT, a little over 5200 miles in 10 days with my step father. It was nice to have the time to reconnect with him. I got home and realized I do not want to be an RV delivery driver! It was a doable trip and if I had had a bit more time and warmer weather(it was November) it would have been really easy to add a week and be much more relaxed. We probably went through $1000 - 1500 in gas and 4 or 5 nights in hotels on the way out (prob $600) plus meals we were still not over $2500. Even with my time and wear and tear on the vehicle it is a lot cheaper than having it delivered 2600 mi (one way) times $3/mi is $7800!
