Wardrobe closet

We want to get a temporary drawer storage unit to place in the closet on our 19. Can someone tell me the width of the opening and the depth?

Thanks,
Brenda

We're just back from our 2nd trip in our 19, and we've concluded we're going to do this mod as well. I thought we'd want to keep the wardrobe for hanging stuff, but for 90% of the camping we do we don't have anything to hang. Shelves for drawer-like storage will be more useful for us.

Brenda: I haven't taken the measurement yet, but I'll try to remember to do so tomorrow and get back to you.

We bought our 19 with the wardrobe shortened to accommodate two drawers below the wardrobe and so the wardrobe is fairly small to begin with. We have since added a shelf in the wardrobe and now use it as a pantry. Works well for us as there is plenty of storage elsewhere for clothing.

One of the great things about this forum is the diversity of camping lifestyles. I, for one, have never stored clothing in anything other than a huge tote in the back of my truck. Before leaving, I take it into my bedroom, fill it up (who knows what the weather will be like), and take out what I need the night before while camping. The dirty clothes go into a laundry bag back into the truck. At the end of the trip, I take the tote back into the bedroom and unload whatever I haven't used.

So I also had shelves and two drawers installed instead of the full wardrobe (thanks to JohnB for that idea!).

We just had Kim add one drawer under our cabinet yesterday and now we are thinking maybe we should go for two. We are probably driving her crazy with these last minute changes. I agree Karen, this forum has great diversity and because we haven't seen a 19 in person it is very valuable to get ideas from those that have experience. Some ideas will fit your own and others won't but many things you would never even think about. We kind of forget about the use of the back of our vehicle for storage but it will always be with us unless the new Escapes can drive themselves.

Doug, that would be great if you could do the measurement. We also noticed in a picture Kim sent us that the the back wall of the close angles in at the bottom so the depth is less there. There was a change to the closet when they changed the wheel well.

Dave, using part of the closet for a pantry is something we could do too. When we have the trailer home my husband wants to put in some shelves.

Thanks everyone! 15 days, 15 hours, 37minutes, and 30 seconds until the day we pick our Escape up. 8)

Brenda

I don't know how to copy a previous post to this thread, but if you check out the 'Bobcat' Sep 09 thread "more storage" you'll see a simple and functional change to the closet. I know and like it because I now have that trailer...Glenn.

In my 19' I purchased some of these Amazon.com: Household Essentials Medium Storage Box, Natural Canvas: Home & Kitchen
I then would take into house and fill with needed clothes, these stacked real well inside the closet on 2 shelfs I installed here http://www.escapeforum.org/forums/f8...-a-1657-6.html

I have the short wardrobe cabinet in my 17B, and added adjustable shelves. I usually travel with one button down shirt - the rest are "T" shirts so the shelves work well for them & jeans, shorts, and a couple of plastic bins for socks and underware. Shoes live on the floor below the bottom shelf. Has worked for 3-4 month long trips...

OK, here are the measurements...

The opening to the wardrobe closet is 12 1/4" wide and 35 1/2" high.

There is a bit of a face frame, so the actual closet dimensions are slightly larger. There's an additional 1/4" on the left, 1 1/2" on the right, and 3 3/4" on the bottom (I didn't measure the top, 'cause the shape of the top make it less useful). This means you've got a 14" wide closet, with a height around 40" high.

The depth of the closet varies, because the back wall is not vertical. You've got an inside depth of 25 1/4" at the bottom, reducing to around 22" at around 30" of height.

There is a cable run tucked in behind the face frame on the right, so you lose a bit of the corner there.

Hope this helps.

I won a couple of these at the Escape Rally. I found that on the 17B ( at least ) they fit under the bed ( since you can collapse them to the required height ), but also that they slide past the mount for the table post. A perfect fit. I ended up buying two more ( two in a package ) at Lordco. I can fit four of them under the double bed.

Those look very functional for a number of things. I got a good laugh, however, at reading the description and "Processing Time"--I think they need a new translator.

I didn't notice the processing time, but I did notice that it claims to be 40L, with dimensions of 50x30x11. 50x30x11 what? Doesn't matter if it's inches or centimeters, it's not 40 liters. Or 40 gallons. So I don't know how big it actually is...

I like those, wonder if they are available in the lower 48?

I only looked at the web site for the picture.
I got mine at Lordco, which has a useless web site.
Was $35 for a pair as I recall.
Can't find a name anywhere on them and the box is long gone.
Can only suggest you Google using the description on that web site.

Thanks for your thorough measurements Doug and thanks to everyone else for your comments and ideas. We'll probably end up using the wardrobe space more as a pantry than for clothing storage as well. I like the idea of the wire mesh unit I saw in a thread a while back, but I think we'll wait until we actually have our Escape to figure out what we really want to do.

Got my Escape in July 2008 and I'm still deciding what goes where, and what I really need to bring.
