Bird ID request
A month ago in Pt. Reyes this bird almost insisted that I take its picture. At first I thought it was a gull, but with a band on its leg? So birders-- what kind of bird is it? Thanks.

A "Banded Gull".
BTW. There is no such thing as a "Sea Gull".
My iBird app shows a gull like your picture and names it Herring Gull. Its winter range includes Florida, along with west coast of US and Canada.

Scientifically speaking, it is Larus argentatus.

Or, according to the Audubon app, it could be a Glaucous-winged Gull (Larus Glaucescens). It looks almost like the one Carl mentioned.

My brother (an avid fisherman) calls them flying sea-rats.
Looks like a California Gull to me, or a Western Gull. Those two are really hard to tell apart.... Ooops, pink legs, probably the Western Gull.

btw, Cornell Labs has an awesome free bird ID program for Android or IPhone called Merlin. It can identify a bird from a photo.

By far the most common name used around here. On any trip to the dump you will see thousands upon thousands of them flying and feeding there.

I second John's recommendation of the Merlin birder app. It helps identify birds, but you can also browse the images (several for each bird; different ages; male and female) and play the audio for bird songs, calls, etc. There can be quite a few different sounds for each bird. I sometimes get it out ( at home; on the lake while fishing) and engage the birds with the various sounds. The reactions are often profound.
The astounding thing is the app is absolutely free, with no annoying in app purchases or ads! . I never look at the Peterson's bird guide, printed or app. This is always in my pocket.

well, minus the 'sea' modifier, a flying rat is a pigeon.

I use the Audubon app for birds. Very detailed, and lots of ways to do a search. I think it is rather pricey, I got it on a Christmas deal over a bunch of years ago.

Downloading. Will compare with iBird Canada, which I have. Also provides multiple pix, bird calls, range etc.
