Cellphone network question
Since there are telecom people on this forum, I thought I'd ask about how cellphones work when transiting from one "cell" to another one. Does the cellphone send out a "ping" to which the new tower responds, or is it the other way around-- the tower has a beacon that the phone responds to? Or is some other method used altogether?
Please forgive me if I've asked this question before; I don't remember. And if I did, I certainly don't remember the answer.
