My dad has given me leave to take a few things that I particularly wanted (he asked)--they are sentimental value. When he passes (he was 90 on christmas day) the rest of my sibs can have it all. There may be money from property sale if he doesn't require expensive care....that I will likely put toward my grands' education.

The division is done and it went fine. The gift claim rule was helpful. We also agreed to a sibling claim rule. No heirloom can be sold. If the person who takes it no longer wants it then a sibling may claim it. I don't know how that will work out, but, like any good treaty, it gets you past a bumpy place and keeps the peace.

Once you have gotten past this phase, it is generally smooth sailing. I know in our family there have already been heirloom type items that have moved to others, the next generation now getting some with the oldest (mine) at 42 and the youngest now 22 (both my brothers). Nice to keep these things in the family.
