Here's what our fire starter looks like now:
https://www.amazon.com/Outland-Fireb...ZZ93CMNYJWKM57
We miss the good 'ol days of real wood campfires... but with this we can still have a 'campfire' even if they declare a 'no fire/campfire' day in CA since propane appliances are (so far) permissible on those days. Starting to enjoy the lack of smoke and ease (just hook up to outside quick connect)...and when done, the lava rocks cool off quickly, making it easy to stow away (in TV) for safety, if needed. Cheers! -Bea

I have the same one. When I want the smell of a campfire, I wrap some pieces of wood in heavy tinfoil and place them on the coals. Flame and smoke, what more could you want?

What a great idea!! My husband has lots of wood chips for his smoker here at a home so I might have to sneak a few of them along with us next time and try that out. Thank you!!! -Bea

We have had a "no outdoor cooking" ban at least once in Washington. (Unfortunately handed down moments before I started to cook for a potluck.) I think they had banned those firepits, too, but don't remember. Most of the time they say no charcoal but propane is okay because you can turn it off quickly. But I have seen some pretty wild propane fires during burn bans.

I have tried many things Duraflame logs, lighter fluid , a blow torch, fire sticks and campfire sticks that look like soggy particle board, toilet paper rolls stuff with dryer lint and Vaseline, etc..
The best product for me appears to be a product made by the Zippo lighter people. It works like C4. All you do is light the rapper and it burns very very hot. It even starts wet wood.

Lots of great ideas in this thread…
the ones I buy are simple, fast, and *one* burns for plenty of time to start the fire. always.
made of only wood shavings and food-grade wax.
$19 USD for 30…. make sure you get them from Amazon directly… not a 3rd party at a higher price.
Light-A-Fire 100% All Natural Starter Pods 10-15 Minute Burn for BBQ, campfire, charcoal, fire pit, wood & pellet stove, 30, Waterproof for Indoor/Outdoor

They are a store bought version of the ones in egg crates that we learned to make in scouts, you just need a source for the shavings. You can get away with very little material in egg crate holes as long as a couple shavings stick out so you can get them lit easily.

Dryer lint too
Dryer lint works well too, as does sawdust. Navel lint works too but it can take years to accumulate the required amount!

I used to make them with small animal wood shavings you can buy at the pet store.

Hi Glenn
Depends on the size and depth of the innie. Big guy, fuzzy shirt, lots of activity, couple handfuls every night. Can be damp though.
Merry Christmas to you.

Hmm, new challenge for the next Escape rally? Who can start a fire faster with naval lint?

There is also the geeky way of starting a firefighter like my friend did here, using a piece of solid fuel rocket engine.

Who remembers the Jet-X 50 and bigger plane engines for launching balsa wood airplanes? The rocket fuel comment jogged my feeble memory. I had a couple and built a few gliders and hand launch planes. A lot of the kits were made in Iowa, SIG? The Thermic C was my favorite.

I knew there was somebody who would know about them. Recently my 13 year old grandson had to interview someone with a historical perspective on the space program. Although he got full credit in the report, I’m pretty sure he regretted picking me to interview because the length of his transcription was pretty time consuming and took him away from his video games. My memory ncluded references to the Jet X engines. I think the teacher just weighed the report and gave him the credit.
