Hail in San Antonio Last Night

We had a really severe hailstorm in San Antonio last night, with baseball sized hail reported in many areas. I'm out of town which had me really worried since I couldn't check for damage. But according to my wife, we lucked out. Except for a bunch of tree limbs all over the property, the hail was smaller around our house, and we didn't have any broken windows or vehicle damage.

Here's hoping other South Texas residents on this forum fared as well.

Robert it's usually the vents, plumbing stack covers and plastic things like that which are busted or cracked by the hail. Glad the worst of it missed you.

Yes, also glad that you escaped the worst of it. We were cringing just watching it on TV. Can't imagine sitting it out with your windows getting smashed in etc.

We are in a different area of town than Robert but we did not get any hail, just wind and rain. An area about 3-5 miles away was hit very hard. Also the BMW dealer in town lost his entire inventory due to hail damage. The photos were not too pretty .

We live close to the airport, yep baseball size here too.
Thank goodness the Dream is under cover in an area that was not hit.
The house is okay, but some damage to the vehicles....nothing like some parts of town though!

We saw that on TV news in Edmonton.

It's always sad to see this sort of destruction, but my guess is that the dealership is insured (so we'll all pay for it, not the dealership) and those cars will be repaired and sold cheaply to people who will later have paint problems... they won't likely be destroyed.

This is one reason to check on the history of almost-new cars...

Be happy you don't have an Airstream. Many years ago I was involved in the insurance industry and there was a "catastrophe" declared in Bismarck, ND. I looked up the details and a severe hailstorm with golf ball size hail hit an Airstream rally. It damaged every trailer with initial estimates of about $8,000,000 total.

Oh dear! Sorry to hear about the hail in SA. Was glad it passed to the south of us (we're NW of Austin), but had not heard the hail was so big. Awful.

No. It's not my photo; I just thought it share worthy.

Plano is in north Texas, and Austin is south-central.

We heard about "baseball" size hail in north Texas (Wylie), as we drove through rain on Monday from Village Creek (southeast Texas). Hoping the SA "baseballs" weren't this huge. (I've never seen anything like it!)

Well, the wife called me last night to inform me that the only vehicle not in a garage or under cover - my truck - was indeed damaged by the hailstorm. Won't know how bad it is until I get home late Friday. Oh well, I guess that's why we have insurance. It's also why we're looking for a house with a bigger garage that can accommodate the truck.

These spring storms in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, et al reminded me of my race across the country last year, trying to dodge them in my travels to Osoyoos. Perhaps the northern way should be the preferred route, to avoid them.

True, but this storm was one in a million. We get hail every year or so, but never this large. And, we're much further south than the area that usually gets the most intense thunderstorms - Tornado Alley.

Hail in San Antonio Last Night

Back home and checked the truck. Could have been worse. Several small dents on the hood, the roof, and on the driver side doors.

Good news is these should be easy to repair. Bad news is that all the body shops and paintless dent repair shops are booked solid through September. Those who had their windows broken are faring even worse. Auto glass is apparently back ordered in San Antonio now for 4-5 weeks. So, those folks need rental cars. Those are gone too. Quite a mess.

Amazing what havoc can be wreaked by baseball sized chunks of ice falling from the sky.

In laws entire community is getting re roofed in S Ft Worth. That was from the prior hailstorm. The crews were all out roofing the community when the recent softball size one hit, but it missed them. They would have had to re roof all the new roofs if they had gotten hit again. Quite a mess for a lot of folks.

Years ago I was offered a very good job in the DFW area. After some time I researched the weather up there....that's why I live here! What happened Tues night is so very unusual for San Antonio, hope it's another life time before it happens again!

You said it Vicki. Some of my friends have lived in San Antonio for over 50 years, and none of them can remember anything like it.

funny story about hail

I have several as a storm chaser for 28 and thankfully a short timer now. In all those years we never had a hail storm west of the Rockies. I got a call if I was interested in going to Montana, for 3 months, that's a no brainer. Anyway, the hail was so large it went thru the decking of roofs. Additionally, we had claims for work comp for employees who were outside on a smoke break when hail hit, they tried to cover there heads because the hail was large as they tried to re enter the building Turns out the hail actually broke there wrist before they could get inside.
