Hey Dave...

Right now I'm watching a tractor square dance at the farm show in Harrisburg, made me think of you seeing all those old tractors doing their thing. Farmall, JD, Moline, Massey F. were represented.

You better get dinner and beers ready, Dave is probably already on the way...

There's a couple of these groups in Iowa and over in Nebraska, Kansas and Minnesota that I'm aware of. I've seen one group at the state fair. They all had Farmall M's and Super M's . They practice in their home towns in the middle of Main Street. Just got back from dinner with my old Commissioner who is a farm boy from Strawberry Point Iowa. He owns an H and a Jubilee Ford 9N I think it is. He's got all the classic tractor stories of a 9 year old boy driving a tractor to near death and yet came out unscathed. Remember Red Foley pitching those Massey's in the late 50s and Tennessee Ernie Ford singing 16 tons or Shotgun Boogie? Red Foley was Pat Boone's Pap in Law. Ice storm coming in they say. We'll be sheltering in place.

Tractors

Hi Alf
I guess you could call it a tractor/trailer event. They spend $5,000 fixing up an $800 tractor. They drive the tractor up onto a $4,000 trailer. They hook the trailer to a $55,000 pickup and drive 150 miles to show off for 20 minutes. Their wife follows with big 5th wheel with 5 slide outs, pulled by an even fancier pickup. They camp at the fairgrounds with flies, mosquitoes, and the scent of fresh horse manure, diesel exhaust, and slightly burnt cooking oil from making deep fried Twinkies. There are some scary parallels here to what we do.
Got our confirmation for Niagara this week. :thumb
Have a great weekend

Hi Jim,
I think that would be fun to see in a short video clip .... can this site do that? ... and along similar lines can we audio on the forum?

Alf, you do realize Dave goes to these rallies looking for new people who haven't heard all his stories? Everyone in local hardware stores, gas stations, restaurants and groceries stores all suddenly find very important tasks in the back room when Dave heads in the front door... With my aging memory and attention span luckily I won't remember them from one rally to the next.

I have always enjoyed Dave's wit and humor on this forum and without it, this forum would be kind of quiet as it sometimes gets. I really enjoyed meeting him last spring and will try to again this spring. He and Nindy are the only forum members that I have met personally though I feel like I know a whole bunch of you. Unfortunately a lot of the rallies occur during my prime work schedule so it may be a while before I get to those. I still work part time and as for retirement, never.

Everything here is covered with ice and the worst is moving in tonight. Loren

Totally agree Loren. Shout out to Dave and his stories. The world (at least this little world) is a better place because of them.

Tractor square dancing is pretty tame. At some Midwest state fairs they have combine demolition derbies. I've heard of them but have never seen one. Loren

Hi Loren, They have had a couple combine demo derbies down around our country a few years back. Then they went to motor home derbies and a young guy got killed a couple years ago so that's all for that. The granddaddy combine demo is at the Bremer county fair and has been going on for 26 or 27 years. That's not that far from Readlyn where you go to help. Bremer county has some nice county parks and they would serve as a base of operations if a person wanted to see the combines. It's about 80 miles ( an hour) from our place.

We've reached the nadir

Why didn't someone say they liked trailer demos earlier? Benton county, our county, Fair, July 12 to the 16th 2017. 22 miles from our home, trailer demo/ race every year. It's either Friday or Saturday night. Camp in the yard or nearby Rodgers Park, admission to the event only. No general admission, no parking fee. Beer tent, pork tenderloins, church pie. Avenue of the breeds. Iowa at its ________.

Jim, you might be in need of an LP refill by then-- want to enter the Prairie Schooner pulled by that Hemi?
