How does your town celebrate New Year's Eve?

New York City drops a ball in Times Square on December 31 at midnight. More locally to me, Pensacola, Florida drops a pelican (not a real pelican mind you, a big plastic thing). And my favorite: nearby Mobile, Alabama drops a giant Moon Pie!

So-- how does your town celebrate the start of the new year?

(...mmm...moon pies...)

Nothing here but up the road in Northampton they have a crystal ball that goes up at midnight instead of the conventional down, followed by fireworks. In the camping theme, the World War II club has the band Trailer Park playing during the night.

I have no idea how the rest of Calgary does it, but we have a party at our house every year for some close friends and family.

In the country

Living in the country, a few folks rummage around and find a few left over fireworks from the Fourth and set them off around midnight. The traditional celebration here, if I am still awake and haven’t drank too much, is to step out on the back deck and run 5 loads through the 16 gauge 870 into the night, slide the shotgun back into the case and head for bed. I’ve got some Forty Creek Canadian Whisky and plenty of egg nog for libation. What is nog anyway?

Don’t know when you lived in Omaha, but the shotgun salute was standard in Council Bluffs too. We lived at the Lewis and Clark Monument on the bluff across from the Epply airfield. I notified “visiting couples” that it was time to put their clothes back on and leave the park at 10:00 every night. Once in a while when I was in the holiday spirit I’d let them stay past midnight. Never once had a problem with anybody. 1970 thru 1978. Had to educate my grandson about Joe Tess’s place in South Omaha and convince him that carp are edible the other night.

We all sit around a campfire and watch the kids skate or do a little ice fishing on the lake
Latter in the evening the neighbors shoot off fireworks
Nothing prettier than the light from the fireworks reflecting off the snow .

So let me get this straight, Jim. Due to the seasonal availability from commercial dairies, there’s only a limited possibility that a fiberglass camper rally happy hour could be named Egg nog X 2 or “squared”. Hey I’m an idea man, no follow through.

Eggnog starts being available around the beginning of October, and in early January you can buy cartons dated March.. so roughly available most of the shoulder season. Not to mention homemade...

For years, Portland, Oregon had a large celebration downtown at Pioneer Courthouse Square... which is affectionately called the 'Living Room." But after a while there were too many people, too many intoxicated people and too many problems. The celebration was stopped.

Now we have a BIG Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony the day after Thanksgiving. It's non-religious, inclusive and families are welcome. It's GREAT.

Because Portland is close to a Native American reservation and they sell fireworks year around, New Years sounds like bombs are going off in my neighborhood. Frankly it's scary. High flying fireworks landing in bushes, trees and on roof tops. Every year I truly hope for rain... lots of rain. Looks like this year it will RAIN and I'll be able to sleep.

Happy New Year everyone!

I didn't go last year, but in Albuquerque on the big night they dropped a 29 foot red chili pepper 100 feet, in the down town plaza area, I think. Hot stuff, eh?
