You've got us nailed. I should point out that your senate introduced the Metric Act in 1866, a full year before Canada became a confederation ..and you're rapidly moving towards the same morass

I graduated high school in 1975 and it was about there that we went metric in Canada. It was a fairly sustained movement until pressure from US importers, who brought us a lot of revenue, started complaining. I so wish we had of gone metric full bore, it is so much easier to use. And it makes sense.

in 1975 I was tasked with training teachers in my California school district in the soon-to-be adopted metric system. 44 years. Guess it's not gonna happen anytime soon.

I agree and wish the US had gone metric as well. Instead we end up with a crazy mish-mash where I need both imperial sockets and metric sockets. For years I spent Thursday evenings officiating at a 250 meter velodrome and then drove home at 65 mph.

Finally I joined the Metric Liberation Front. All my bicycle computers are set to read in kilometers. I am riding at 25 km/hr while my slower friends only go 15 mph. Every time I drive our Prius I switch the display to kilometers. My indoor outdoor thermometer reads Celsius. Others are roasting at 90 degrees Fahrenheit while I am cool as a cucumber at 32 degrees. Saves on air conditioning too. And when my friends say that something is 10 miles away, I look at them with a blank expression on my face and say “How far is that in kilometers?” I made the contractor for our basement remodel change the drawings so the showed meters rather than feet and inches, explains that if “feet” were used they would have to be based on the length of my feet rather than some long dead aristocrat’s foot. It took a while but the contractor finally gave in.

It’s been a long, hard lonely fight here in the MLF. But every time I get discouraged, I think of Miss Kessler, my high school chemistry teacher, with her long blond hair explaining how we would all use the metric system eventually. And I know that the struggle is worth while.

And the wheels go round and round. Do you get there faster if measured in MPH or KPH?

The Army went metric years ago. The Navy uses 'knots' and 'fathoms' Sailors are a little weird anyway. Given a choice of dirt or water, I'll go with the dirt.

definitely get there quicker with KPH! but truth be told, it has been a while since I switched the cyclometers to KPH, and I do think I have gotten a bit faster over the years. Or maybe the bikes have lighter wheels, and better components.

Maybe you've gotten younger, Leon.

Hey Leon
I have a Campagnolo front wheel up in the garage. It is al least 35 years old. Is there a market for these? I think it’s pretty true and has Campagnolo in “script” on the center hub. My brother rides a Super Monday.

There are always folks interested in vintage parts / bikes. But most wheel from 35 years ago had 36 or 32 spokes. Now isn’t uncommon to see wheels with 20 spokes. And many bikes come with disk brakes. So it is a limited market.

Thanks Leon
I’ll dig it out and look it over. I see it up there every year when I get my Christmas lights down.
