Is Imitation the Sincerest Form of Flattery?

Was surfing through the Escape owners group on Facebook and Arnie had changed their cover photo. The trailer pictured, a 2nd Gen 19, had a name on the side: Past Tents.

They could have just asked. Even used the same font I did.

That's not imitation. That's plagiarism.

Two different Escapes, each with the same name, using the same weird font called "Poetsen One".

Yeah, deleted my post when I saw the FB reference. I like Roger Waters' recent comment about Mr. Zuckerberg.

Which "Escape Owners" group on FB? There are at least two that I know of. One is "Escape Owners of America", which also has multiple other trailer brands "of America" in their stable.

Back around 10 years ago I belonged to a group of Lazy Daze RV owners and we called ourselves “Past Tents” so the name has been around for a while

I thought my chosen name "Toad" was clever until I discovered it was a common term for a vehicle pulled behind a motor home. I've learned to live with it.

Rbryan4– My 17a was pictured on the Facebook group yesterday. I have used the name Past Tents since 2013, initially on my Chalet Aframe and then on my 2018 Escape. I saw it on someone else’s aframe prior to 2013, asked the owner if I could also use the name, and my request was quite generously granted. I am a (now retired) English teacher and enjoyed the double pun.

I’ve been aware since soon after I joined this forum that you chose the same name for your trailer, but never entertained the thought that you had copied me. Seemed more like “great minds think alike”.

My name was posted with the picture yesterday, and I would have appreciated you contacting me directly with your concern.

There are any number of products on the market with names that came directly from the company owner or the inventor/ developer. They have become the generic term for that kind of a product. And some copyright battles have occurred too. Switching over to other “craft” I’ve seen multiple boats and street rods with the same names.

Then we get to names for places of business with the same names my favorites are small motels named Mountain View Motel, Cafes named The Thistle Do, and finally outdoor themed beer joints named The Duck Inn or the one off of the lunch place The Dew Drop Inn. To me it’s all good.

I honestly can’t get too wound up about it. Of course with a common name like mine where there were two students in my junior high with the same name, seven students with my name at Iowa State and about 25 or 30 in the Omaha phone book back in the day of big phone books, I learned to live with duplication. As I always said “You got two choices, live with it or change it.” Life’s too short to obsess over anything (except catfishing). Wait…..some SOB repurposed that term too, well I’ll be a blue nosed gopher. Have a great day and drink more water, it’s hot and dry.
Iowa Dave license plate IA DAVE ( which I had to wait for till the guy who had it died or quit driving)

Sometimes you think/consider options for a long time to come up with a clever and a unique name for a trailer. Unfortunately, sometimes we find out that someone came up with it before you. It is unfortunate, but this is not the only case of multiple trailer’s with the same name. In this case, Robert was “original” because he did not intentionally copy someone else. Whether to consider it flattery or lack of cleverness when someone intentionally uses the same name as you is a decision of the individual being copied. Past Tents is still a good name, and I would commend Robert for coming up with it “without help.”

Glenn, all the "... of America" Facebook groups are 'owned' by John and Melissa Martin. John owns a print shop, Melissa has a small crafting business best known for her spare tire covers. I think they use all the groups to promote their businesses. They own a 1970s Scamp. They're the hosts of "Eggs on the Hiawassee River" gathering. I left the Scamp Owners of America group when John started using the group as his political platform during the POTUS election.

I would think you'd pick 23 Skidoo.
23 skidoo (sometimes23 skiddoo) is anAmericanslangphrase popularized during the early 20th century. It generally refers to leaving quickly, beingforced to leave quicklybysomeone else, or takingadvantage of a propitiousopportunityto leave. The exact origin of thephraseisuncertain.

Dave, I’m really surprised that none of those Omaha guys were listed as NE Dave.

When I was parks superintendent we were always on the lookout for picnic tables that had been appropriated by citizens. We had a branding tool and branded each of the boards twice on the bottom side. The brand was deep. One was obvious but the second one on each board was hidden by the two inch frame pipe. This allowed us to call the police and meet the person with the belt sander who thought they were clever until we pulled the board and pointed out the second brand. There was some confusion and it took me a little effort to clear my name when a guy with the same name as mine was cited for table theft. Did I mention he was a police dept. employee in our fair city? Awkward it was.
Most anything with Dave is good with me but I would not have a personalized license plate if I lived in Mississippi. MS DAVE just don’t feel right.

We were going to copy Past Tents as well, but settled for Escape Pod. There are definitely a few other Escape Pods out there!

Why would you? I didn't know of you at the time, and didn't know of that type of trailer.

Not really a concern. It's just a name, and isn't copyrighted.

It's not extra-terrestrial but when I need to call home to report an unusual reference to my 19 I just tell 'em it's about "ET19." Hope Spielberg doesn't mind.
