A good friend has a cargo trailer set up to pull behind his 38' motorhome. It takes along all the toys he wants, and he even has it set up with fold down beds to sleep on when he just drags it behind his truck.

Scouting for a trailer

When I was Scoutmaster we had a gear trailer that was a 30 year old rear 1/2 of a 60s Ford pickup with a topper. We decided to get a new trailer. We had some funds in the treasury but needed more. The boys and the adults came up with fundraising activities and a theme of
$1,999.00 in 1999. We painted a rental house for a member. We sold hot dogs at grocery stores on Saturdays. We parked cars at some large special events, flagged moto-cross races, you name it. That fall we had more than met our goal and bought a new trailer similar to the one you showed in you post. The exercise taught the boys a lot about working towards a goal, talking to and working for adults, and accelerated my personal goal for them of understanding the concept of Espirit de Corps. The trailer pics brought back a good memory for me. Thanks Jim Norman.

I belong to a Facebook group "Cargo Trailer Conversions." There's right at 10,000 members. Some of the build outs are fantastic! Others look like someone put a boat trailer under a metal garden shed. It's fun to look at pics and I like some of the creativity in the builds. For instance, beds that drop down from the ceiling, so comfortable seating can be used underneath. It's the same type of build I see in the OutdoorRV Trail Series.

Reace converted a few of these cargo trailers a number of years ago. He called them, "The Escape Terrain". He did it because he was looking for a small toy hauler for his ATV's and couldn't find one. They had a shower and bathroom at the front and then drop down seats and beds. He gave me a tour of the first one he made when I dropped by the factory one day. I think he only made 3 or 4 of them though.

Our first trailer was a motorcycle hauler as I was still riding then. Quite versatile and similar to what you described Reace was doing....fold down beds and all.

The Little Cargo that Could...

A few trailers ago we decided to get back into camping and purchased an “all most new” cargo trailer...and of course modified the interior.

At the time I was heavily into Search and Rescue and it allowed me to transport my ATV to searches hours away and stay overnight. This saved hours not driving back and forth each day to continue the search. It can also be set up as a remote mobile command center with one antenna mast and 2 antennas on the roof.

Then we inherited a cabin 10 hours away that need work. Our cargo became the main transport for goods with many loads stacked to the roof.

Now it is shared by our daughter and family for camping once again.

There is almost a king bed inside that can be converted to a couch by day and can be stored on the walls to make way for larger items like our side by side.

The modified red tool box is the kitchen cabinet and stores all the plate, pots, glasses and food, with shoe storage under. The front point has the counter across with sink and cabinet above. (Photo taken during construction) under the counter is open for the 12 volt compressor chest fridge and port a potty. Both can be removed and replaced with a small home freezer on wheels that we take to the cabin for our extended stays. Even with the freezer up front we can still transport our tractor to the cabin as well.

It has been a real useful investment for under $4,000 all in.
