I very much enjoyed this movie.
You may have missed this in the credits: "No fruit carts were harmed in the making of this movie".
No empty cardboard boxes were hurt either. Just good script, acting and photography / editing.

Same here, but I still do not understand why Fern did not stay with Dave ? (Hell I would have stayed with Dave )
My wife said I would never understand ? ? I guess. I have watched this movie twice already.

Random boondocking can have it’s scary moments. A scene in Nomadland struck a familiar cord with me. Fern is inside her parked camper truck somewhere just off the road at night. She is startled by a sudden knock on her door.

It is not something you expect. A violation. Rain, snow, cold, you feel safe in there, protected by your shell. At night no one should be calling on you. A knock like that makes you feel in sudden potential jeopardy. In her case it was a cop telling Fern she had to move off, no overnight parking here. It could have been worse.

We were parked at a truck stop in Joplin one night when at 9 PM someone knocked on our door. We had the same reaction as Fern. First, no way I was opening my door. I was glad the door was locked. Wished I had a baseball bat handy, just in case. The person outside began to tell her sad story in an attempt to get money to help her.

I had to think fast because a first thought was this stranger might slash my tires or something if I got her mad. So I suggested she go inside the truck center and ask them to call the police and they would help her. That worked. Guessing use of the word “police” was enough to scare her off.

The scammers are out there. Oddly enough, several years later I was in a hotel parking lot unloading a suitcase and a guy came up to me with almost the same, identical sob story.

Don’t need to be boondocking for someone coming around asking for money . Has happened many times
Getting gas at stations , auto parts stores. Once when I got in my truck he starting banging on my truck with his fists . You have to be aware of your surroundings , turning on lights might help if out alone . Reason we don’t like to be out there alone . Pat

We were at Camping World in Tucson securing the propane tank I had just gotten filled when I was approached by a 40 something man and he had quite sad tale to tell me. If I could have believed him I would have been happy to help him but it just didn't feel right to me. So I asked him directly "how do I know you're not scamming me". He tried to tell it was all true but I wasn't buying it. I asked him why he hadn't gone to the police to see if they could help him and that's when he turned and left.

It's frustrating because you don't mind helping people who really need it but these scammers make you suspicious of everybody.

Yes most of us have a good heart and want to help . Once saw. A fellow pushing his cart collecting cans and had vet hat on . We tried to give him some money and he didn’t beg or ask , he refused . He was trying to make his own money and didn’t want a handout . Pat

We have an effective way to deal with that. Most cities have homeless shelters, food banks, and other volunteer organizations to help the down and out. If someone truly wants and needs help, and not just the cash needed for their next bottle or fix, there is usually help available. My church for example operates a food pantry that helps feed over 800 families in the area. We also maintain a benevolence fund to help certain folks who might have a hard time making rent or paying utilities from time to time. We're just one example of the many organizations in our area who do similar.

We direct people who ask us for a handout to those resources instead. Of course, you have to know what resources are available, so it's not as easy when you're traveling and aren't familiar with the area.

Work the parking lot

I was in a Wal-Mart parking lot and got the grift gab. Another lady was working a different section of the lot.
It's run like a business. Drive thru scamming. I've suckered up a few times, but don't want to help unknown others with their scripted pleas no more.

They do seem to go after the over 55 year old folks.....soft touches maybe.

But Nomadland is a different tale. There are plenty, and growing numbers of folks "out of luck, work and money". The pandemic will certainly increase the numbers, of formerly upright folks in dire straits.

And those folks get lumped into the category of "disposables". That's not good, or humane.

This is a great piece just written by the author of the book behind the movie, worth a read:
