Our yutes.....
Long gone sayings from our youth and parents......
Words lost from our childhood*
“Murgatroyd”!--
driving a “Jalopy"
Well, I hope you are "Hunky Dory
"Don't touch that dial,"
"carbon copy,”
"you sound* like a broken record,"
"hung out to dry."
we had a lot of "moxie."**
“Heavens to Betsy”!
“Gee willikers”!
“Great Caesars Ghost”
Jumping Jehoshaphat!
Holy Moley!
Holy Toledo!
We were "in like Flynn", "living the life of Riley" and even "a* regular guy"
“all the tea in China!"
Oh, my aching back!
Kilroy was here, but he isn't anymore.
"Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle!" or, "This is a fine kettle of fish!"*
“Knucklehead”
“Pshaw”
The milkman did it.
Hey!* It's your nickel.
Don't forget to pull the chain.
Knee high to a grasshopper.
"Oh, Fiddlesticks"!
Going like sixty.
I'll see you in the funny papers.
Don't take any wooden nickels.
Wake up and smell the roses.
It turns out there are more of these lost words and expressions than* Carter has liver pills.* This can be disturbing stuff!* (Carter's* Little Liver Pills are gone too!)
See ya later, alligator!
Okidoki.
"Monkey Business"!!!

I was quite pleased a couple years ago to hear my son refer to his two girls as "honyocks", which my dad and my Serbian grandpa used to call us affectionately back in the day. (somewhat derogatory slang for eastern European immigrants, likely from the 30's and 40's)

We were called honyocks and we were honyocks. Sometimes honyockers. Mostly it was now the socially unacceptable Bohunk, Flathead or Dumb Bohemie. The latter of which could be used as self deprecation if it was followed by punching yourself in the head. Does that explain anything?

Nice fire! Warming my hands.... Ok, would be interesting to see if our younger generations are aware that there really is a distinct relationship between a cassette tape and a pencil! ...oh those wobbly songs.... and those recordings with every possible ambient noise in the background. Those were the days! -Bea

I had a book years ago that explained the origins of expressions we use every day such as "Going the whole nine yards", "Dressed to the nines" and thousands of others.
Wish I still had it.

I believe the 9 yards is a military expression as some ammo came in 9 yard belts. Anyone remember the metal roller skates and taking them apart to attach to a 2x4 to make a scooter with a fruit box attached as your hood....

I enjoyed the read and remember many of those sayings being part of my vocabulary in my early years. When I would get frustrated about something in my youth my go to word was "Bullwinkle'!!!!
Enjoy the journey.
