The signs in that area that warn of dangerous crosswinds are no joke. It's best to slow down - way down. My guess is that speed was a contributing factor.

Robert, has excellent advice and accurate description of conditions to expect. Having been across that gorge a number of times, I also suspect they were gawking at the scenery and not paying as good of attention to the driving. It is a breathtaking sight.
I doubt the safety chains on our Escapes would hold our tow vehicles in a similar manner. That’s a heavy rig and pretty heavy chains. Not sure the weight of the Escape would stay on the bridge either, but honestly don’t want to replicate the situation to find out.
They are blessed they get to tell their story, and if only the dogs could speak.
